Sam had a careful balancing act going on as he tried to hold on to the stack of books he was carrying and unlock the library at the same time.

"Shame spiral?" Sam asked. "Where do you even learn a phrase like that?"

"I'm from New York," Peter said, handing over a donut. "Pretty much everyone I know is in therapy." Peter took a thoughtful bite of his own donut. "Except the ones who should, probably."

"Are you suggesting I should be in therapy?" Sam asked with a smirk.

"That depends," Peter said, deadpan. "Do you feel that donut is a substitute for love?"

Sam laughed. "Not really, no."

"Then you're fine," Peter said, flashing a grin at him.

"That's probably about as close to a professional opinion as I'll ever get," Sam said, happily taking a bite of donut.

"Well I am practically a nurse," Peter said. "That counts, right?"

"I guess so," Sam said. "So, have you really given that serious thought? The nurse thing, I mean."

"I know I want to help people," Peter said. "Sometimes I wonder where that'd fit with the heroing."

"I guess heroes need to pay the bills somehow," Sam said. "I think you'd make a great nurse, as long as you don't mind the sight of blood."

"Mine or theirs?" Peter joked. Taking a sip of his coffee helped him avoid eye contact, as well as avoid pointing out that thanks to his family's money he never had to worry about paying the bills.

"Well, hopefully it'll be other people's blood, but I guess you shouldn't be squeamish in general if you want to be in the medical field."

"Hasn't bothered me so far," Peter said. "Not that I've been cutting people to test this."

"I have to say, that would not be a good use of your healing talents," Sam pointed out.

"Plus I think Nathan would let me spend a night in jail if I got caught," Peter said. "Just to teach me a lesson."

"He seems like that kind of guy. I'd say that Dean would do the same thing, but odds are, if I was in jail, Dean would be sitting next to me," Sam said, laughing. "Did Nathan tell you he made me his TA?"

"He mentioned it, yeah," Peter said. "That's great. And oddly continuing the tradition of TAing for each other's families."

"It's a good tradition," Sam insisted.

"I liked it," Peter said, giving Sam a smile.

"And I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it too," Sam said. "Nathan seemed unsurprisingly supportive when I mentioned thinking about being a lawyer."

Peter's eyebrows quirked up. "You're thinking about being a lawyer?"

"Yeah, that's why I'm taking his class in the first place. It's not just because he's Nathan," Sam said.

"See, the law part is why I'm not taking the class," Peter said, joking. "Huh. You a lawyer."

Peter took a thoughtful bite of his donut.

Sam gave Peter a curious look. "What's that supposed to mean?" he asked. "I could be a lawyer."
