Her first library shift of the new year, and Mac has a brand new toy to keep her entertained today.

She also has coffee.

Mac is one seriously cheerful geek right about now.

"This library's kinda awesome," Mac agreed. "Didn't have anything this good where I used to go to school."

"You one of the new people?"

"Yep. Just got in yesterday." He offered a hand, a little awkwardly - he knew it was expected but wasn't exactly a social wiz. "Michael."

Mac juggled her book stack around into one arm, and took his hand with her now free one.

"I'm Mac," she said in return. "And uh, welcome."

"Thanks." He returns her smile crookedly, shaking hands. "You been here long?"

"Two years... yesterday," Mac said after a moment of thought. "Scary, huh?"

"Really kind of is." It was a joke, though. "You really like it here, huh?"

"It's... had its moments, over the last couple of years," Mac said, giving a little shrug.

"It grows on you."

"Good enough for me", he returned, echoing the gesture. "Growing on you's better than my last school."

"Never really liked my last school all that much either," Mac admitted. "Neptune..." She pulled a face. "I fit in way better here. Everyone is a bit odd in their way."

"I like that."

"Guess everybody fits in if everybody's weird", he agreed. "I cut at West Roswell more than I went."

"Exactly," Mac agreed. "Plus, even when we're getting attacked by something, there's usually a kinda awesome atmosphere. Which... is weird, I guess."

"...attacked by something? Does that happen a lot? I mean, I know there was the Fandom Invasions class, but..."

"A couple of times a year," Mac confirmed with a little nod. "Never managed to beat us yet."

"Huh. That's... really weird. What kind of invasions so far?"

"Oh, you know, snowmonsters, trolls, zombies, aliens.. " Mac shrugged. "The usual."

"And I heard about the gremlins", he added. "But they're here all the time, right?"

"I think they got an exterminator for them... " Mac said slowly. "If they are still around, just try not to get bitten. It can get embarrassing."

"Yeah, that's what Isabel said. Hallucinations, and all that."

"Makes you do crazy things," Mac confirmed. "Think you're TV show characters or animals or whatever."

"Also, I've heard, kinda painful."

He pulls a face. "I'll remember that. Don't want to end up in the hospital or whatever."

"Oh, I don't think you need hospital treatment for it..." Mac said. "I mean, they're not bigger than a breadbox."

"Yeah, but there's the effects." He shrugs. "I'll watch for them, anyway."

"Here's to the not getting bitten," Mac agreed. "Oh, also you might want to keep an eye on the cafeteria food. I've been told there's people in it."

So, she didn't really believe that one, but she had to continue a tradition. It was what she'd been told on her first day, after all.

"...people?" He blinked. "Like... in the meat?"

Mac shrugged innocently. "I was just told that the food was made of people."
