Lucas decided to hang back from the crowd a little and people watch for a while.

Brooke actually did a double take when she saw him. Considering the girl with her face, the double take was even more warranted than it would be normally.

"Lucas?"

"Brooke?" Lucas was more than a little surprised to see Brooke there. Not to mention speaking to him. "What are you doing here?" he asked.

"I go here now," she said. "Did you miss that bulletin? What are you doing here anyway?"

"I missed the bulletin?" he asked, confusedly. "You mean you and Peyton got my letter."

"Your letter?" Brooke asked, frowning. "What letter? It's been months since I got any letters from you and we really don't want to be talking about that."

"Months?" Lucas repeated. "I taped it to her door before Keith and I left last night."

"Nooo," Brooke said, no less confused. "Again with the happening months ago."

"Well, unless the drive up took a hell of a lot longer than I remember, there is something strange going on here," he told her.

"Yeah," Brooke said slowly. "You know I wanna hit you for that now, by the way, since you just did it or whatever."

"You didn't like the letter?" Lucas asked, maybe a little hurt.

"Could have done without the leaving," she said, like this should have been obvious. She might have forgotten that she had a few months separation from the whole thing.

"I'm sorry, Brooke," Lucas shook his head. "I'm not trying to hurt you guys by leaving, I just thought a change would be good for everyone."

Which was what Evey was doing, too. In an effort to be more outgoing, like they were always saying she should be, she smiled at the boy.

There. That was outgoing.

Lucas smiled back with a little wave. "Hey, great day for a picnic." He could do small talk.

"Who knew the weather in Virginia would be so nice in January," she said, waving back. "Are you new as well?"

"Warmth wasn't what I'd expected from Virginia." He'd assumed north meant colder, not warmer.

Lucas nodded, "That's right. What gave me away?"

"Lucky guess," she replied, smiling more widely. "I'm Evey. And really, none of this is what I'd expected, but I'd happily count the warmth on my list of confusions."

"Well, Evey, I'm Lucas and hopefully I won't end up on that list," Lucas said, mouth forming a half smile.

"Are you going to do magic, or are you from the past?" she asked, raising her brows. "Because that's really nearly the whole list at the moment."

"Um, past or present depends on who you talk to," he said, looking a little confused. "But I know I don't do magic. How about you?"

"No, I don't," she said, considering that. "And I suppose it is relative. What year are you from, then?"

"I'm from 200?" he said ~~because a season of his canon is only half a year and thus who knows, la~~. "Which feels a lot like the present to me."

"2028," she replied, gesturing to herself. "Which I thought was the present but apparently it's the future."

Lucas was a little shocked. "That's definitely the future as far as I know." He was also a little relieved that the weirdness wasn't contained to just the thing with Brooke.
