"You didn't like the letter?" Lucas asked, maybe a little hurt.

"Could have done without the leaving," she said, like this should have been obvious. She might have forgotten that she had a few months separation from the whole thing.

"I'm sorry, Brooke," Lucas shook his head. "I'm not trying to hurt you guys by leaving, I just thought a change would be good for everyone."

"Brooke, this is the present!" Lucas was starting to get frustrated. "I left Tree Hill last night and just got here! What do you think has happened in the interim?"

"Lots of stuff! Because I left Tree Hill last night and you were totally there! I mean..." She paused, gesturing to her shirt. "You see this? This is from Target, Lucas. You apparently missed a lot."

He looked at her shirt with concern. "Wow Brooke, what happened?" He didn't know she knew what Target was, let alone shopped there.

"Capitalism sucks," she explained. "My parents went broke and had to move, and voila, here's me. I'd invest in a tiny violin but my cards are maxed out."

"That really sucks," he said. "I can't believe it missed it all."

"Neither can I. What the hell," she said, but any irritation at him was fading into irritation at... whatever happened. "This is weird."

Lucas wondered if his brain was going to split in two with all this talk of time. "This is just...I can't believe you're from the future."

"I'm not from the future!" she protested. "I'm from the... now. Maybe you're from the past. Huh? Did you think of that?"

"It's all relative, Brooke," Lucas pointed out. "But if it makes you happy, I'm from the past."

"Is it weird that it does?" she asked, wrinkling her nose a little.

"No," he said. It made him feel better to think she was from the future. And it really made him want to call Hales.

"Okay! Before this gets weirder, I think I'm going to go find my room. But you know, if you need anything, I'm around."

"Yeah, same here. Which you probably guessed. You know, I'm going to go, too. Be social." This might eventually not be weird. Or she was going to need some alcohol.
