Being merry was what Rikku did best. She was bouncing around at the picnic, wandering, grabbing snacks, making chit-chat, and having a grand old time. As you do.

"Hey Rikku," Ron said with a wave. "Your roommate decide to tear herself away from her books yet?"

"Hiya!" Rikku bounced and waved back. "I dunno if she's coming or not? But she toooootally should. There are newbies around! We get to tell them how weird Fandom is and freak 'em out! Isn't that awesome!??!"

"Well that's not very nice is it?" Ron said. "Which doesn't we shouldn't do that but I thought it was important just to put that out there before doing it."

"If it makes you feel any better," Rikku giggled, "we're telling them the truth. They just think they're being teased a lot. It's like a rite of passage thingy. They'll be pestering the next group a few months from now."

"Oh! I see. I kind of missed that bit since I got to school later than everyone else last term," Ron said as he looked around the crowd. "Then again the only strange thing here are the professors and everything that uses eckletricity. I mean the paintings don't talk back and the stairs don't even move around on you."

"You did?" Rikku frowned. "I missed my first picnic, too. Just didn't realize it in time to show up, I guess. How come you were late?"

She blinked, a little taken aback. "Your ... other school did that?" Man, talking paintings sounded sweet.

"Well yeah, it was a magic school. The whole place practically had a mind of its own sometimes. There was even a hidden room there that would always give you what needed. It was rather nifty at times."

"Duuuuuuuuuude." Rikku stared for a minute. "I so need to see this school. What if you don't know what you need? That could be so awesome. Just stand outside the room all "Gimme what I need, I think?" and you go in and it's, like, a sandwich and some duct tape. And some CD you really liked that you thought was missing."

"Yes. Well, I don't think it works like that exactly but I suppose it could work that way," Ron said scratching his head and wondering when this girl ever found time to breathe. "I'm sure I'll be heading back there sometime this term so I can see if they'll let me bring any visitors. Usually they don't allow muggles into the school."

"You could sneak me in?" Rikku asked. "Uh. I can do some magic, I'm just not very good at it yet. Does that count?"

Reno? Did not want to be here. Reno? Did not want to be here. Reno?

Was kicking at the ground as he wandered about. Stupid ground. This was, of course, the ground's fault. He couldn't exactly blame the boss.

Reno? Didn't notice that patch of loose turf until he was laying on the flat of his back.

Reno? Continued to not want to be here.

"Piece of shit."

Whoa. That had to suck.

Rikku leaned over, peering at the guy with bright-red hair.

"Hiya! Uh. You okay?"

It sucked.

He wasn't about to pull himself to his feet just yet. The ground was nice. Hey, there was sky up there. And. Some freaky girl who couldn't dress herself. Nice.

"No." It was really more of a noncommittal grunt than an answer as he sat himself up.

"Yeah, I saw, I mean, you fell," Rikku chirped, cheerful and oblivious as always. "I didn't even see what you slipped on. Might've been your shoelaces. Do you need a hand?"

"No," he grunted again, pulling himself to his feet and giving that loose patch of turf another kick for good measure. Stupid ground. Stupid island. Who the hell ever heard of 'Virginia,' anyhow? Rude was going to hear about this. 'No, dumbass. It isn't a resort. And the girls are annoying and don't know how to dress.'

And that was coming from the guy who made tailors weep with the way he wore his suits.

"'M fine, yoto."

"Are you new here?" she asked, bouncing on her toes. "I just had to come down to the picnic, you know? Terrorize the newbies with all the weird stuff. Except then I feel bad when they think I'm crazy and freak out and all. But it's true so it's not like I'm hazing them or anything, just, you know. Fair warning and all. Uh. You sure you're okay? Bad day?"

"Bad somethin', anyhow." Reno didn't bother to dust himself off. Dusting himself off would indicate that he actually gave three shits about what people thought of him, at this point. He had already determined that high school sucked, so he was going to just do whatever he needed to do to get the job done and leave. "You got the terrorizing bit down pat, yo. Good job."

Okay, that was not very nice, thank you very much.

"I was just offering to help you since you fell over on your butt," she huffed. "If you don't want my help then you should have said so. There's no need to be rude about it, you know."

Her haughtiness required italics.

"Rude's my partner. I'm just entirely unpleasant, yoto."

Aw, he had hurt the feelings of the kid who should have let her parents dress her in the morning. He felt terrible. Kinda. ... No. Not really.

"You asked if I wanted help. I said no. How is that not sayin' that I don't want help, again?"

"Me too," she said, giving a happy little bounce. "It's so exciting, you know?"

"Uh huh! And the best part is, we're not the new kids anymore!"

Rikku laughed. "I haven't been a new kid for a year now," she pointed out.

"Yeah that's true. Neither have I. But the fun of not being one still hasn't worn off for me."
