Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

That particular response earned Rikku a slightly inclined eyebrow and a rather bemused smile.

"What about 'em?"

Rikku narrowed her eyes. "You know. You all think you're so awesome and look-how-cool-I-am. I got to take Sokka back to the Omega Ruins with me, and he was all "Pfft, if YOU can handle it, I sure can." Yeah, right. He got his butt kicked. 'Cause hey, just 'cause he's A GUY and I look like this doesn't mean I couldn't freaking mop the floor with him."

This was, yes, a sore point.

"Saying 'zoto' has something to do with some dumbass who couldn't handle a bunch of ruins?" The eyebrow was going to stay raised for a while, here. "I know better than to think girls can't get the job done, yo. Worked with some of the finest."

There came that smirk again.

"But I can still say 'yoto' better."

"No," Rikku said, eyerolling. "It's the whole cocky 'I'm better than you at everything just 'cause I say I am' deal. And it's not just that I'm a girl, it's that I'm, you know. Tiny, and hyper, and whatever, so nobody expects the concealed Glock." This got a pout. "Which is in the freaking weapons locker. So. Lame."

"I'm not exactly fond of the weapons locker, either. They put a scratch in my materia, and I'm gonna bust someone's face in." Bitter point? Yes. Yes it was.

Rikku's expression got very, very serious. "They have my Godhand in there. My Godhand is an ancient, legendary weapon that was intended for me and only me to save the freaking world, and it is far more badass than anything has a right to be, and it is my favorite possession ever. I should be able to sleep with it under my freaking pillow if I want to. Because if they so much as look at it wrong, I am going to freak out."

Now here was a girl who liked her weapons. Reno could come to respect that.

"My mag-rod and I have been through way too much shit together." He rubbed at his left wrist and scowled. "Feel naked without it cuffed there, yo."

Rikku's face had a sour expression. "I hate that feeling. I don't have my explosives, I don't have my Godhand, I don't have my Glock. Well, if something attacks, I sure hope it doesn't head straight for the weapons locker. 'Cause then we're all screwed." She shuddered. "Besides, you know. I always keep grenades with me. It's not fair."

"Don't suppose they'd like it if we started makin' bombs in the dorms without telling anyone." Even his slouch was a bitter one, here. "When I got sent to this place, nobody said I was gonna have to give up my weapons, zoto."

"Me, either," Rikku said, folding her arms. "I wonder if we could do it. Probably get in all kinds of trouble. But all kinds of things explode, right?"

"Can probably blow up damn near anything if you take the time to figure out how," Reno replied, the corners of his lips twitching a little as he considered it. "Doesn't hurt to try, does it? ... Unless you do somethin' stupid like blow yourself up, I guess. But what kinda idiot goes and does something like that?"

"That's why you need to keep a Healer around," Rikku said. "Just in case. Shame Yunie's back in Spira. Lulu knows some white magic, but she's more the black mage type, you know?"

"Guess the right resources go the long way." He gave a shrug of his shoulders. "Carrying a few potions and phoenix downs never hurts, either, yoto."

"You have those, too?" Rikku asked, bouncing on her toes. "Nobody has those! They look at Hi-Potions funny! That's --"

Rikku froze in place, eyes suddenly wary. "You're not a Yevonite, are you?"

"A what?" Reno was giving her another funny look. "Not last time I checked, yoto. This one of those things I'd know about if I was?"

He had to pause for a moment, here, as something else sank in.

...

"You tellin' me they don't have potions in this place? What the hell?"

"A Yevonite," she said, looking away. "One of the people following that bullshit religion. One of the ones that said we were the reason everything was happening. One of the ones that never questioned anything and destroyed our Home and --"

Slight pause. Still looking somewhere else entirely that was apparently very fascinating. Still no real tone to her voice. "No. No potions."

Great. He'd been here for a couple of hours, and already he'd managed to break the happy girl.

"That's. Uh." He was freakin' terrible at this reassuring, friendly stuff. "That sucks, yo."

But he was trying, at least?

"Sorry," she said quickly. "I'll stop ... whatever. Bugging you. Uh. Glad you weren't hurt, yeah?"

Probably not a very accepted way to end a conversation, but this one got all weird and twisty-turny on her anyway, and better that than her standing here rambling about the Yevonites and Home and crap he didn't care about.

Reno ran a hand through his hair and watched as she turned around.

Huh. That went well.
