Sam had a bigger cup of coffee than usual with him as he went to open the library, in case he needed the extra caffeine to get back into the swing of things after the long vacation weekend.

"Yeah, but you might eat it."

Sam rolled his eyes. "I promise, I won't eat your food. I have my own."

"Well it's not like you haven't been doing the puppy eyes to get my food your whole life."

"Yes, but I won't do that today, I promise." Like he was trying to prove himself, Sam took a big bite of macaroni and cheese.

Dean watched. "And you say I eat too like a barnyard animal."

"I'm trying to eat like you," Sam said around a mouthful of macaroni.

"I don't eat like that," Dean protested.

"You need to eat in front of a mirror at some point, so you can see how you eat exactly like that," Sam replied.

"I've watched how Alec eats," Dean pointed out. "That's kinda like looking in a mirror."

"I honestly cannot believe I'm about to say this, but when it comes to food, Alec has better manners than you do."

"I'm totally telling him you said something nice about him when he comes back."

Sam rolled his eyes. "Great, then he'll think I'm starting to like him or something."

"Oh the horror!" Dean mocked, then grinned. "Come on, admit it. You don't think he's all that bad."

Under normal circumstances, Sam would have argued. But with Alec gone, Sam was trying to keep Dean as happy about the situation as he could. "All right, fine. He's not so bad. At least, not nearly as bad as I thought he was before."

Dean nodded in agreement then frowned. Sammy had given in way too fast. "You're just saying that to humour me, aren't you?"

Sam took the opportunity to eat some more, to give himself time to answer. "Sort of? What, I'm not allowed to humor you when you bring me food?"

Dean's frown deepened. "I don't know. Maybe? But not if it's because you're doing it because you think I'm going to self destruct or something if you don't."

"I just feel bad saying bad things about Alec right now, that's all," Sam replied.

"He's not dead, y'know," Dean pointed out. "Just... away. There's no rule about speaking ill of those who are away."

"Yeah, but I don't want to make you think about him being away," Sam explained.

Dean shook his head. "Hate to break it to you, Sammy, but I'm pretty much thinking about that already. I even am sorta writing to him."

"You are?" It was possible that the idea of Dean doing writing he didn't have to was a little strange to Sam.

"Yeah. Kinda like a journal type thing." He shrugged. "Let's me yell at him about missing things as they happen."

"Are you going to show it to him when he comes back? Or is it just for your own use?"

"The plan now is to show it to him." Dean smiled a little. "That way he gets however many weeks of me being exasperated at him in concentrated form."
