Library [11/26]

Sam had a bigger cup of coffee than usual with him as he went to open the library, in case he needed the extra caffeine to get back into the swing of things after the long vacation weekend.

Sam made sure that all the returned books got checked back in, and that no one had anything that was overdue.

Sam took some time to sort through his e-mail, and started thinking about Christmas presents. He had quite a few more people to shop for this year than he had last year.

The library was closed while Sam was in Religion class.

The library was closed for lunch to everyone except Thursday, the other aides, and anyone who wanted to bring Sam food.

Sam was in the back, re-organizing a few of the shelves, but the bell was there if anyone needed to get his attention. Not that he'd gotten to the point of expecting a visitor during this period or anything.

Sam took a long sweep through the library to make sure that he had everything cleaned up before he locked up.

I have ten days of student teaching left. I can survive that, right?

Someone did come in. Someone came in with two cups of coffee, in fact. Someone then put one of the cups safely down onto the counter, rang the bell, then turned himself and the second cup invisible while waiting for Sam to show up.

I believe in you, if that counts for anything.

Sam came out of the stacks when he heard the bell, carrying a handful of books, and glanced around when he didn't spot anyone right away. Then he saw the coffee and broke into a smile. Setting the books down on the counter, he grabbed the coffee and took a long sip.

And that would be when Peter turned visible again, casually sipping his own coffee. "So, how was your holiday?"

Sam jumped when Peter reappeared, and nearly spit out his coffee. "Peter? What the hell was that?"

"Careful," Peter said, grinning at Sam's reaction. "I didn't bring any napkins."

Sam set his coffee down where it would be safe on the counter, and turned back to Peter, looking him up and down. "What did you do?"

"Got a new power," Peter said. "Kinda weird how I did, but you've gotta admit it's useful."

"Yeah, useful in scaring the crap out of people," Sam replied. "So, you met someone new? While you were at home, I mean?"

"Awh," Peter said, not at all contrite. "The look on your face was pretty funny though. And yeah. Older guy. British. Kinda... unique."

"Unique because of his power, or unique because he was crazy?"

"Both?" Peter offered. He took another sip of his coffee. "He was nice enough, though. Gave me a few lessons in using my powers. And his."

"Really?" Sam said, breaking into a grin. "Do you feel better now? Like, more in control? You seemed to control the whole invisible thing well."

"I dunno?" Peter admitted. "He sure gave me things to think about though. Like how I spend too much time thinking about my powers before I use them, instead of just using them. He said I don't react like someone with powers."

"I guess he kind of has a point," Sam said. "It does seem like you think about your powers a lot, but I think you have to since you don't want to hurt people with them. Unless that's necessary, of course."

"And don't think I'm not still freaked about that," Peter said. "But in situations where I need to act on instinct? I do normal first, powers second."

"You haven't had your powers for that long," Sam pointed out. "You've spent your whole life doing normal first."

"Don't laugh?" Peter said. "But part of it is in my head I don't think of them as mine. Even though I can call them up at any time, I still feel like I don't get to call them my own."
