Sam had a bigger cup of coffee than usual with him as he went to open the library, in case he needed the extra caffeine to get back into the swing of things after the long vacation weekend.

"Don't laugh?" Peter said. "But part of it is in my head I don't think of them as mine. Even though I can call them up at any time, I still feel like I don't get to call them my own."

"I won't laugh. I think that makes sense. I mean, you wouldn't have any of your abilities if it weren't for the people who gave them to you. But they're your abilities now too," Sam said. "Especially since you can do them without anyone else around."

Peter smiled. "I knew you'd understand. So how was your holiday?"

"Uneventful. In a good way," he added quickly. "The first Winchester Thanksgiving was a success, and then I spent the rest of the weekend relaxing."

"Ours went pretty well too," Peter said. "Nathan and I took Mac to see the parade, then it was doing the tourist thing for the rest of the weekend. Got any plans for the week?"

"Besides not having a nervous breakdown about finals being so close? Not really."

Peter blinked with surprise. "Finals are close?"

"Yeah, there's only a few weeks left in the semester," Sam said, before pausing for a moment. "Okay, maybe that's not what most people would consider close."

"Oh, right," Peter said, shrugging it off. "I knew that."

"I worry about this kind of stuff way earlier than I should," Sam said. "It's one of the downsides to being a geek."

"Lucky for you I'll be your friend anyway," Peter teased. He fiddled with the cardboard sleeve around his coffee cup. "So I've got a date tomorrow."

"Oh, really?" Sam asked, smiling softly. Dates were a good thing, after all. "Who are you going out with?"

"Ronan," Peter said. "Apparently he wants to make me dinner. So that'll be tomorrow."

"That should be fun. Ronan's a really good cook," Sam said.

"I think he's going to try to make Italian to impress me," Peter said. "I almost don't have the heart to tell him it's not like there's some ancient family recipe he's gotta go up against."

"So don't tell him, and see what he comes up with," Sam replied. "It'll be impressive no matter what, I'm sure."

"I'll let you know how it goes," Peter said.

"Good." Sam's smile widened a bit. "I hope it goes well for you."

"Well, if my streak's any indication at least I'll get a nice friend out of it," Peter said, shrugging philosophically.

"I hope it goes better than that though. You deserve more than a friend."

Peter raked his hair out of his eyes. "Right guy or girl's bound to be out there somewhere."

"Yeah, definitely," Sam agreed. "You've just got to find them. Maybe Ronan will be the right one."

"Cute, accent, cooks - I could do worse," Peter said with a grin.

"I can think of a lot of ways you could do worse," Sam agreed. "And I can think of quite a few people who would love to be in your place."
