Library [11/19]

Sam had very fond memories of working in the library during high school. When he remembered it was Monday, the day he'd usually had his shift, he headed down to the library and situated himself behind the desk with a small stack of books, and a look that dared anyone to try to get him to leave.

After his encounter with Dean, Sam shouldn't have been surprised either, but he couldn't keep from staring. "Peter? Uh, hi."

That was okay. Peter was staring right back at him.

Finally he said, "So... what's new?"

Sam laughed. "A lot, if you're still a teenager."

"Since yesterday? Yeah," Peter replied. He came over to the library desk. "And you're... what? 50?"

"35!" Sam said, narrowing his eyes despite the fact that he was still smirking. "I don't look that old, do I?"

"Naaaaaaaaah," Peter said, with the face of one who was only being polite, really.

"I'm going to tell Dean you think I look older than him. I don't know whether or not he'll think that's a good thing," Sam replied.

"Wait - Dean's older too?" Peter asked. "Man, I'm starting to feel left out."

"Not here, he's not," Sam explained. "It's weird. A whole bunch of us showed up for this reunion, but then Fandom got weird and now we're here, instead of twenty years from now like we should be."

"I ran into Andrew last night," Peter said. "Sounds like the future's been nicer to you than him."

"I don't know how Andrew's doing, but the future's been better than I expected," Sam said.

Peter smiled. "Really? I'm glad to hear that. You should be happy."

"Thanks," Sam said, smiling. "I had to work hard for it, but the happiness has been worth it in the end." I could be happier though, he thought, but he didn't say it out loud.

"Best kind," Peter said. There were so many questions he was tempted to ask. But - much as he hated to admit it, and god knew he'd never use the same wording - it was probably better not to. Especially since most of the questions he'd ask were kind of prying, and who knew if he and this Sam had stayed close enough to have that kind of conversation? So Peter stuck to safer topics. "Gonna go out on a limb and assume your Dean's okay?"

"Yeah, he's good, although I have no problem gloating about the fact that that's as much my doing as it is his," Sam said. "I swear, he gets into more trouble now than he used to."

"Makes me wonder if Nathan's doing the same to me somewhere in the future," Peter said.

"Getting into more trouble than usual, or keeping you from doing the same?" Sam asked.

"Oh I know he's keeping me from doing the same," Peter said. "It's if he's trying to even the scales."

Sam snickered. "I have a hard time imagining Nathan and trouble together, unless it somehow involves you. No offense," he said.

Peter heaved a put-upon sigh. "No hope at all that I could come across as the responsible son?"

"Only to someone who's never met you before."

Peter laughed. "Well I'll know to try that on strangers now."

"You should," Sam replied. "If only for the entertainment value when they realize what you're really like."

"Oh yeah?" Peter said, still laughing. "And how's that?"

"A magnet for trouble who makes it impossible to stay mad at him for more than about a minute and a half," Sam said.
