Library: Friday [16.11]

Karal had slept. Sort of. Regardless, he was back at the library at sunrise.

He made himself sit down with a cup of tea while he waited for everyone to arrive.

Sleep had done wonders for his mood (and he'd only admit that to one person), so it was a considerably less tense and less exhausted looking Fraser who found himself in the library that morning.

Seeing that Karal was busy, he waited a moment before trying to get his attention.

A man in a red uniform was always going to get Karal's attention, even if his first reaction was to wonder why there was a bard in the library. Maybe he'd spent too much time in Valdemar.

With an effort, he forced his thoughts back under control and hurried over. "Constable Fraser? Has something happened?"

"No," he said quietly, waving a hand. "There's been no change in the situation at Town Hall. I'm actually here just to check in with your team. If you could update me on what you've possibly found?"

Karal hesitated. Going into Special Collections without permission was absolutely forbidden. He didn't think Fraser would stop them, but...it was too important to risk.

"We think we may have found something." He held up a hand. "We don't know yet, we have to keep looking, but we found a survey report with a notation indicating there were a large number of deaths hundreds of years ago in a very short period of time. The remains may never have been removed, and if not, they may have been disturbed by the destruction of the school. We're trying to discover what we can about those deaths."

"I spoke to someone who mentioned this possibly tying into the destruction of the school," Fraser said and nodded. "So, this is possibly a history repeats itself type of situation?"

"Honestly, I don't know. Maybe? I don't know whether to hope for it or not. But it's all we have," he replied, sagging a little to lean against the desk. "If there is an answer to be found, we will find it, I swear to you."

"I have no doubt," Fraser said, smiling gently. "Do what you can and know that it's appreciated unequivocally. If you should need any help or any other resources that I can provide, please do not hesitate to let me know."

He bit his lip, worrying at it. "I would ask a favour, if I may?"

"You may," Fraser said. "What do you need?"

"My friend, Gabriel. He's in the hospital. He," Karal shook his head, trying to find a way to explain Gabriel, "he'll be frightened. I don't think he's ever been sick before, he doesn't understand it, and he thinks his god is trying to kill him. He doesn't have anyone but me, and I can't be there to make sure he's all right. Would you check on him, please?"

"He'll be one of my first stops," Fraser promised, putting a hand on Karal's shoulder. "I'll check on him for you. Anything, don't hesitate to call me."

"Thank you," he breathed, slumping a little in relief. "Tell him I sent you, that I said he can trust you. He should listen to that." Karal hoped so, in any event. "If we find anything, anything at all, I'll send Altra, he looks like a cat, but he's not, to tell you."

"Altra and I have met," he said and smiled. "He was helpful earlier in the week. I hope he hasn't tried Jumping any further after getting knocked back so hard."

Karal just stared at him, completely confused. "He couldn't Jump?"

"That's what he told me on Tuesday," Fraser said. "He couldn't Jump off the island."

"Oh." Karal frowned. "He didn't tell me that," he said, then sighed. "I think there are many things he doesn't tell me. But it's good to know."

"I apologize for surprising you," Fraser said and winced. "I thought he'd have told you."

"Please, there are no apologies needed. He is his own person, and he does what he thinks is right." Karal smiled. "Plus, he is a cat. It's amazing he told you anything without cloaking it in riddles."

"Of course," Fraser said and nodded. "I should get to Town Hall. Good luck, today. Call if you find yourself in need of assistance."

"I will call if we need help," he promised. "Stay healthy, and Vkandis watch over you." Vkandis watch over all of us.

"You as well," Fraser said, giving Karal a brisk nod before turning and leaving.
