Karal had slept. Sort of. Regardless, he was back at the library at sunrise.

He made himself sit down with a cup of tea while he waited for everyone to arrive.

"I hoped you'd say that." The relief was clear in his voice, and he sagged forward a little. "Rodney, last night, he found a plan of the island, from when it was surveyed. There was a note on it. Three hundred years ago, there were a large number of deaths on this island, all in a short time. There's a chance the remains were never removed. If not, Peter suggested that could be the source of sickness, that the destruction of the school could have shaken something loose," he explained. "The only resources that will tell us of that time are housed in Special Collections. So that is where we must go."

Chris listened intently, nodding at various intervals during Karal's words. "That makes a lot of sense. I'm willing to do whatever it takes. I've heard Special Collections can be dangerous, but, well, I have some magical abilities that might help keep us safe."

"I pray it will not be necessary," he replied, and it was utterly heartfelt, "but if it decides it doesn't want us there, we're going to need them."

"Hopefully it doesn't want to see everyone die," Chris replied. "I'm Chris Halliwell, by the way. I don't believe we've met."

Karal blinked, then laughed a little. "Karal, Karal Austreben. Forgive me, my manners seem to have disappeared somewhere this week and I've yet to find them again. It is truly good to meet you, Chris."

"Likewise," Chris replied. "And I think manners are probably the last thing on anyone's mind this week."

He bounced on his toes a few times. "Is there anything we can do before we head into Special Collections?"

He rubbed his forehead, thinking. "Pray, if you have a god," he suggested. "Other than that, we just need to wait for the others. Strength in numbers is needed this morning, I feel."

Chris nodded. He'd never been a particularly religious person, but praying seemed like a good idea.

"I have a feeling you're right," he said. "I'll be around. Let me know when we're ready."
