Fandom's Next Top Runway Model [Monday, Period Five]

When Lee got to the classroom today, there was a note on the door written in what appeared to be very shaky, very scared handwriting.

Fleeing the crazy.

Will return when threat passes.

Lee stared at the note for a long time and then shook his head before going into the classroom and trying to think of SOMETHING to do.

When everyone started filing in and settled down, Lee said, "Ares went and got married this weekend." Hey, he was in control. "To some girl name Rowena. I think they're on their honeymoon now or something. Make sure to wish him well when he gets back. He didn't leave us anything to do so I'm going to make something up. As a lot of you saw, I got stuck to the side of the dorms in my underwear last week by a teacher who you all should call grandmother when you see her. And then tell her I told you too."

What the hell, right?

"Anyway, that leads to the big question. Boxers or briefs? Or nothing? For girls...well, I don't know what underwear girls wear so the girls can figure that out? Why's one better than the other? Why would anyone for a frakking thong? And what the frak is up with this planet's obsession with thongs?"

Lee really shouldn't make things up off the top of his bed.

"No modeling though. Ares might reappear as soon as that happened and that'd be creepy. Oh, and if anyone would like to bitch about Parent's Weekend, we can do that too. We probably need to."

And then Lee sat down at the desk and waited for the discussions.

"It's not so much dragging Sammy into trouble as you two not dragging me," Dean said.

Dawn bit her lip. "This was my thing, Dean, not yours."

"That's funny because hunting? Kinda my thing. Watching my friends' backs? Definitely my thing. Watching my brother's back? That's the definition of my thing."

"What do you want me to say? I've already gotten the big sibling lecture on this, Dean, and I have to say, it sucked." She set her chin and glared at him. "I'm sorry I didn't invite you out to kill vampires and maybe get beaten or die. Better?"

"I don't like getting left behind."

"Neither do I. But I hate watching people I love die more."

Dean shook his head. "I really don't like getting left behind."

"And I really don't like watching people die. I won this time. Suck it up and move on."

Dean closed his eyes and counted to ten slowly. He couldn't expect Dawn to get why this was such a huge thing for him as easily as Sammy did and besides the middle of class was no place to start yelling. "I wish I could," he finally said, his voice taking on that particular tone it always did when he was trying to make light and failing miserably. "But I'm still working on sucking up Alec leaving and you and Sammy not needing me is just a bit too much suck for me at the moment."

Dawn's hand hit her forehead. "It's not that we don't need you, you moron. It's that we were taking our turn protecting you. Because we need you to be around for a very long time, and we thought we could handle it."

"I'll refrain from pointing out how often those are famous last words because so not the point," Dean said. "Near as I can figure, there's two things I was put on this earth to do: hunt and take care of Sammy. You take Sammy hunting without me, you're pretty much negating my entire reason for existing. Do it often enough I might just vanish into thin air."

"That's not funny," she said, crossing her arms across her chest. "Sam's capable of thinking for himself. Maybe you need to...let him go, just a little, and trust him to make the right decisions?"

"When have I ever acted like I don't?" Dean asked, genuinely puzzled.

"When you don't let him go hunting without you?"

"That's not the same thing. Every hunt I go on, I ask him to go with me," Dean said. "Well, cept the one at Disneyworld because there wasn't really a way for him to get there in time, plus the imps were bad enough with having to listen to him and Alec snipe at each other all night. But when we're in the same state, I always ask. Because he's my brother and there's no one I trust more to watch my back. So yeah, I'm going to be pissed and hurt when he acts like the opposite isn't true."

Getting visibly frustrated, Dawn said, "He trusts you more than anyone on the planet to watch his back. He knows you'll keep him safe. I was crazed, okay? Because my slayer was in trouble, and Rikku got all kinds of beat up, and this was the guy who tortured me, but I had to go anyway. I almost didn't take Sam, but he wouldn't let me go without him."

"No one said anything about that up to now," Dean shot back, his own frustration showing. "All I've been getting is we didn't need you and you would've got yourself killed and suck it up and don't feel hurt that pretty much everyone you care about has suddenly decided they're better off without my help."

"Don't be stupid," she hissed at him, "How could we be better off without your help? Geez, Buffy and Faith were both here and I didn't tell them, either."

She took a deep breath and tried to regain her calm, "I'm sorry I don't want you to die, but you're definitely going to have to learn to deal with that. I want to protect people, too, and you're at the top of the list."

"It doesn't feel like protecting. It's more like... disregarding."

"It's over and done," she argued, "so there's nothing I can do to change it now. I swear we weren't disregarding. Avoiding, maybe...."

"Yeah, that's not any better. Worse even."

Dawn facepalmed. "Okay, I said that wrong. I just wasn't thinking, okay? I didn't mean to leave you behind or out...it just happened."

Dean took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. "Yeah, I know. It just... hurt. I'm not good with being left behind any time and it just seems to be happening a lot lately."

"I'll try to do better next time," she promised, since there was always a next time, "and if we weren't in class there'd be hugging until you felt better. Getting left behind is way with the stinky. I really am sorry--the timing was all kinds of bad."

"Yeah. This weekend really kinda sucked out loud. Hell, I didn't even get to see Faith when she was in town."
