Library [10/08]

Sure, today was a holiday in some strange, normal places. But this was Fandom, and that meant Sam was doing his usual Monday duty of getting the library open.

Odds are, he would have done it even if it was a holiday. Geek.

Closed libraries -- or closed anything -- didn't really slow Dean down too much. And he brought along a bag of food to stop any protests his brother might have.

"Hey," he said as he walked in past the closed sign and held up the bag. "Hungry?"

It just so happened that in his rush to get out the door in the morning, Sam hadn't made lunch for himself, and was debating whether or not to take a chance on the cafeteria food.

"A little," he said in understatement. "What's the food for?"

Sam rolled his eyes. "I meant why are you bringing me food?"

"Because you're my little brother and I've been feeding you for the last decade or so?"

"I guess. But you wouldn't happen to be coming by to apologize for embarrassing me in class, would you?"

Dean snorted. "Please. I was just making sure we didn't sit there for the whole period staring at you in silence."

"Other people asked questions, and they would have asked them even if you hadn't started going on about sex, or Dad," Sam replied.

"Hey, if you can't stand by your ideals..." Dean said with a smirk, pulling out a wrapped sandwich and handing it over.

Sam took the sandwich, frowning softly in thought. "I know it's not right to fight with Dad, but you know as well as I do that it's unavoidable, and it's not always my fault. And I told you, I don't expect you to not go out and have sex with all the people you want, because you don't have the same ideals as I do."

"Yeah, well any God who would condemn me for a little consensual fun while there's good people out there getting killed in horrible ways by things He should be stopping isn't worthy of my respect anyway."

"Like what?" Dean challenged.

"Without God, we wouldn't be able to stop some of the horrible things out there," Sam said. "Think about exorcisms. Do you think they work just because they happen to be the right series of words strung together? What we do is in God's name. It's divine justice, sending evil back to Hell."

"We do it because he's not," Dean countered.

"We do it because our Mom was killed. God didn't do a damn thing to save her."

"We're going after the demon because of Mom, and just because what we do has nothing to do with God for you doesn't mean that I feel the same way."

"Yeah, well until someone can explain to me why it was okay for God to let our Mom to die like that, I'm not going to change my mind."

"I wish I had an answer for that," Sam admitted quietly. "I really do."

Dean sighed and ran a hand over his face. "I'd love to believe there was some kind of higher power for good out there looking out for us, I really would. But, Sammy, I just don't see it. There's just too much evil and tragedy out there. If there is some kind of God or something, he's seriously falling down on the job here."

"But the whole world isn't just evil and tragedy," Sam replied. "That's all we see because of what Dad has us do, but that's not all that's out there. There are wonderful, amazing things out there, and I can't believe that it isn't the work of some higher power. There has to be someone out there looking out for us."

"So what?" Dean asked. "Mom was just a bad person then that she didn't get looked out for?" He knew he kept coming back to that, but it wasn't something he could just get past or overlook. It had changed his life -- all their lives -- and deep down inside there was still that little boy who just wanted to know why his mom went away.
