Sure, today was a holiday in some strange, normal places. But this was Fandom, and that meant Sam was doing his usual Monday duty of getting the library open.

Odds are, he would have done it even if it was a holiday. Geek.

"Park, last night," Peter said. He leaned against the front desk. "Mostly he stood there. Didn't talk much."

"And he didn't try to attack you or anything?" Not that that was a bad thing, of course.

Peter shook his head. "Said he had a soul? That something you've heard of? All I know about vampires came out of Bela Lugosi films."

Actually Nathan was the one who had watched those when Peter was younger. Peter mostly got scared and hid behind him until Nathan turned it off and swore it was all make-believe.

Not that Peter would ever tell anyone that story.

Which was a shame, because Sam would have thought that was an adorable story. Then again, "adorable" and "Peter" might not have been such a good match for Sam's brain to make at the moment, all things considered.

"Vampire with a soul?" he said, and then it clicked. "Did he look like Seely Booth with too much hair gel?"

Peter looked surprised. "Yeah. You know him?"

"Sort of. Almost everything I know about vampires I've learned from Dawn, because there aren't really any vampires where I come from," he explained. "Angel's from Dawn's universe, so she's told me about him."

"Gotta admit it was a little freaky," Peter said. This from the guy who could borrow other people's super powers. Aaaaaaaand that made Peter realize something.

"You - you don't think I picked up anything from him, do you?"

"I doubt it," Sam said, shaking his head. "I don't think vampires really have powers. They're just people who were turned into something evil and bloodthirsty. So unless you're feeling a sudden urge to bite me..."

Peter had a sudden attack of coughing. Amazingly this managed to hide his facial expression behind his bangs and the hand he was using to cover his mouth.

"Like a vampire," Sam added quickly. Hopefully, the hiding of facial expressions meant Peter couldn't see him turning red. "You know, in a killing kind of way."

"..down the wrong pipe," Peter said, as an explanation for the coughing. Which was a lie, but it was the first thing he could think of.

If he was suaver he would've remembered Sam had just said something else. But this was Peter so... no.

"Oh," Sam said, totally willing to accept that excuse in the name of keeping things simple. "So, have you? Had the urge to start killing people, I mean."

Peter thought about answering "Besides myself in the past couple of minutes?" but he'd promised not to joke about that with Sam. So, out loud, he said, "No. Not lately. Or, uh, ever. I mean Nathan ticks me off sometimes but I think that's genetic."

That managed to get a good laugh out of Sam. "Then I think you're safe from your encounter."

"Guess I should've figured that out when walking outside didn't make me burst into flames," Peter admitted, sheepish. Then, after a second: "That is true for them, right?"

"As far as I know. Not walking in the sun, staying away from garlic and holy water and crosses, those are all important things about being a vampire."

"No hope of swinging that into trying to get out of a midnight mass, huh?" Peter said, with a joking grin.

"I don't know, it might be worth a shot," Sam replied.

"Eh, it's not that bad," Peter said with a shrug. "Besides, I kinda like the tradition."

"Me too. I've only gotten to go a few times, but it always seems like the best mass out of the whole year."

"Didn't know you were Catholic," Peter said, pleasantly surprised.

"Yeah, I'm kind of the only one in the family," Sam replied, thinking about his earlier conversation with Dean.

"Yeah, I don't have that problem," Peter said, grinning. "So - you converted? Everybody else lapsed? Feel free to tell me it's none of my business."

"It's not so much that they lapsed, but...well, I honestly don't know what my dad thinks, except that if he does pray, it's not in a church. And Dean doesn't have any faith at all, after what happened to our Mom."

"Well, you know me," Peter said. "Believe in destiny. My family. That ultimately there's got to be some goodness out there, even if we make it ourselves. Totally sucked at CCD though. Ma kept getting notes about how I kept asking smart-ass questions."

He grinned at Sam when he said that last bit.
