Comparative Religions--Monday, Period #3, Class #5

Vala was not in a good mood as the students entered, which might have something to do with her torn clothing, leaves and twigs in her hair, and general dirtiness. Or possibly with the fact that she'd missed the opportunity to chaperone Homecoming in a gorgeous dress because she'd spent the weekend up in a tree.

It was probably better not to ask.

"Today, we're studying Christianity, that most noble of religions whose first few generations of believers started off by being oppressed and brutalized and ostracized by both the Jews and the Romans, only to turn around and return the favor once they became the dominant religion on the planet. As with Judaism, this is a monotheistic religion, except for that there's discussion of the Holy Trinity, which is confusing because I thought a trinity was a combination of ingredients. I guess that goes to show you that you can't trust the Food Network."

"Anyway, I started getting confused and a headache, but I have a TA who will be more than happy to talk to you about Christianity while I have a few hundred ibuprofen. There are also copies of the New Testament to read and discuss, as well as a slightly less reverent look at the religion."

"Take it away, Sam. Also, large dogs are a deterrent to a free economy. That is all."

Lana was still feeling a bit groggy and not quite herself after last night's sleeping pill, so she just listened quietly and took what notes she could manage.

Adam took notes, wondering exactly what had happened to Vala.

Irulan stared at Vala's condition, it didn't take a Bene Gesserit to know she was in a foul mood.

Adah was crumpled over her desk to hide a smirk. Why is she not surprised that only into a small paragraph of explanation, confusion set in? She had been concerned about the presentation of Christianity when they got to it, only to discover that it simply made her giddy. She considered even skipping today (seventeen years of having it pounded into your brain by a judgmental, temperamental man who thought he could control you merely because he was male was enough to make a girl want to avoid Christianity for the rest of her life...), but she was feeling glad she didn't.

Especially because she could also speculate a bit on why the Norad Lama Lav was looking so rough.

Blackheart was interested.

No. Really. He was.

It was a slightly different take on the same things he'd been taught his entire life. And while the outlook was certainly different from the things he'd learned in Hell, he was certain that a flip-through of that New Testament over there would be most educational.

Sam had a bit of a deer-in-headlights look as he went up to the front of the class, and may have thrown a glare or two in Vala's direction while she wasn't looking. "Uh, okay. So, I don't have any kind of formal education in Christianity, but I've studied it and I follow its guidelines as well as I can, so I'd be happy to answer any kind of questions you guys have to the best of my ability.

[Hit me with your best shot. I promise to be as unoffensive as possible. *g*]

"The nuns," Irulan asked, "do they hold some kind of power in the Christian church?"

Adah didn't have any questions, but she certainly was peeking out from her head against the desk in her folded arms and listening with the utmost amusement. She was hoping for a trainwreck.

"So, there's s'posed to be a whole bunch of different kinds of Christians, right?" asked Johnny. "What's the difference between 'em?"

Ooooh. This was interesting reading.

Blackheart was somewhat amused at the different sort of outlook. "Praise be" this and "in memory of" that and miracles all over the place. He had to wonder how much of it had been skewed by human perception, but at the same time, he could pick out the similarities between this book, and his own history lessons back home.

Very interesting reading, indeed.

Eve sat there, flipping through a copy of the New Testament and boggling. With the occasional "Dude, that's just fucked."

Lana just put her head down. She'd already walked out of one class today and only sheer apathy kept her from doing the same here.

Sam? Still glaring at Vala. If only he'd brought his crown with him.

"You're so right about the large dogs," the ex-thief among Vala's students felt the need to say.
