Ethics [Thursday, October 5, 1st period]

When the Ethics class arrived in the Danger Shop, they stepped into an entirely different world.

An incredibly dry, hot one. That smelled really bad.

Anakin waved his hand around the room. "Welcome to the embodiment of gluttony," he said, "the palace of a Hutt."

He concentrated on the controls on the far side of the room, and the simulation sprung to life: dozens of beings drinking, eating, and dancing, with all activity centered around a vile slug of a beast laying on the raised dais at the front of the room.

In a place of honor on the wall was a man, face twisted in a silent scream, encased in silver. Anakin ignored it as he walked past to point at the creature on the dais. "That," he said, nose wrinkling in disgust, "is a Hutt. This particular version was named Jabba, one of the most powerful crime lords in the galaxy." A grim smile turned the corners of his mouth up. "At least until he met my children."

He shook his head. "That is neither here nor there. Today is an interactive experience for you, class. Take a good hard look around. See the effects that gluttony can have."

His eyes went flat. "Touch any of the dancing girls and you'll regret it. That's a promise."

He's here to field all questions from "ewww, why's that guy eating things that are still alive?" to "Where does the trapdoor lead to? We've lost a student" to "WTF? There's a guy on the wall!"

Or if you really want to know what his kids did to Jabba. He's kinda dying to share.

Rose passed by Anakin's class and stared. "Old man, did you know you have a man screamin' on your wall?"

Anakin nodded. "My daughter's boyfriend," he said. "Long story."

"You, sir," Rose said, looking at the wall, "have some issues with your daughter's bloke."

"He's not nearly good enough for her," Anakin said firmly.

Not that he knew anyone who was.

"For a dad? I don't think any bloke will be," Rose said, "what's this place anyway? Prison? Tacky museum?"

Anakin nodded his head towards Jabba. "That guy's palace. He has terrible taste, doesn't he? There aren't interior design courses for crime lords."

"Evil Alien Overlords generally don't have much taste in, well, anything," Rose agreed, "Although you have to give that Vader guy props, he may have worn a clunky suit but he sure knew how to work an entrance."

John wanted to hear the story and figured Anakin was there to teach so all would be fine. "What's the story with this Hutt and his interesting wall art?" he asked.

"The man owed Jabba money," Anakin said with a slight shrug. "The bounty hunter who caught up with him had no objection to him being put into carbonite for easier transport. He's still alive under there."

He gave John a smile that didn't quite touch his eyes. "Well, the real one's fine. This one's a simulation."

"That an interesting way to make good on a debt," he remarked, wondering what was with the creepy smile.

"Jabba enjoyed the artwork," Anakin said. "Luke and Leia were less thrilled with it."

"Well, it's not a very ethical solution to a monetary problem. I don't think anyone would take well to seeing another person like that." This was ethics class after all.

Anakin shrugged. "It was hardly the worse thing Jabba ever did. Solo was fine once he thawed out."

"Uhh... sir?" Sora said sheepishly as he came up to Anakin. "I think I kinda missed class last week Because Mun totally spazzed on EVERYTHING OMG and wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything important.

Anakin tucked his hands into the sleeves of his robes. "We talked about pride," he said, "and how an excess of it can lead to disaster. Do you agree?"

Sora thought a moment before nodding slowly. "Yeah, I can definately say so. I've seen it happen more than once and to people I was very close with."

"Apply their mistakes to your life and you're caught up with the class," Anakin said with a nod.

River didn't even try to sneak up on Anakin.

"I believe there's a story to tell," she said, smiling.

Anakin smiled. He pointed his finger towards the slab on the wall. "That is my daughter's boyfriend." He pursed his lips. "I don't understand her taste. She, naturally wanted him back. Luke agreed."

His smile widened. "Being Luke, he walked in here and asked for Solo back."

River looked thoughtful. "Not the strategy I would have chosen," she replied. "I assume it worked?"

"Not exactly the way it should've," Anakin said. He pointed to the grate in front of Jabba's dais. "That leads to a pit with a rancor in it--think dinosaur but slightly smaller. It tried to eat Luke. When that didn't work, he and Solo--were taking onto a prison barge to be fed to a Sarlaac out in the desert."

His eyes lit up with fierce pride. "Luke took the entire ship down, pretty much unassisted. But Leia killed Jabba."

Imperial Intelligence had been incredibly thorough detailing the loss of such a major crime lord.

River tilted her head, smiling at the obvious pride he felt for his children, which reminded her a little of how Simon sometimes talked about her. "Resourceful," she said.

"Brilliant," Anakin corrected with a smile. "They get it all from me."

That last part was obviously teasing.
