Library: Friday [14.09]

Karal had come prepared this week, where prepared meant more tea and slightly fewer books. Once the library was set up, he opened the doors and settled behind the desk, writing diligently in his notebook.

:You look busy.: Altra strolled in and leapt onto the desk, making himself comfortable.

Karal stared. "Where have you been!"

:Around,: was all the reply he got as Altra rolled onto his side and went to sleep.

"Wonderful," Karal muttered, and went back to writing.

Karal did his best to stop grinning and look serious, but he was only moderately successful as he waved at the spare chair behind the desk. "Sit if you like," he offered. "What is it?"

Altra opened one eye, looked at Gavin for a long time, then twitched his whiskers and closed it again.

"Sorry, Altra. Didn't mean to wake you up," Gavin said and came around to sit in the chair that Karal had offered. "I think...I think I'm in love with her."

:You didn't,: Altra replied, sounding gently amused.

Karal glanced at the Firecat then back at Gavin. He'd suspected, but that was not the same as actually hearing it. "Only think?" he asked.

"Oh, okay." And still feeling like he had, he reached out and stroked a hand down Altra's back, both as an apology and to calm himself. "Is there a way to know for sure? This is a first for me. I don't have any basis."

Altra purred, loudly, and said, so only Gavin could hear, :It will work out all right.:

"It has never happened to me at all, and it's not something that can be quantified." Karal placed his elbow on the desk and rested his chin on his hand. "I know you trust her, and that is a large part of it," he said thoughtfully. "The Writ says that real love carries with it the willingness to sacrifice everything for someone out of love, who, out of equal love, would never permit you to, but I am not sure that is helpful."

He smiled at Altra's words before saying, "Someone told me that they knew it was...love because they felt that losing the other person would be major. I trust her. I want her to be happy and I know this is more than just me liking her. It's not casual anymore."

Karal couldn't help smiling. "She makes you feel better about who you are, simply because you are with her? You want what is best for her, even if it were to hurt you?" he asked gently.

:The thought of being without her makes you hurt,: Altra added, lifting his head to look at Gavin. :When you're with her, you feel happy, secure, warm.:

"Yeah," he said in answer to both Karal and Altra. "Yeah, that's it."

"I think it is far past casual," Karal said, nodding, feeling genuinely happy for the first time since he'd left Valdemar. "Have you...does she know?"

:Sounds like love to me.: Altra twitched his whiskers again and to all appearances went back to sleep, but he was still purring.

"I haven't seen her since I realized it," Gavin said, running a hand through his hair. "I'm going to tell her though. I want to tell her."

Karal glanced down. "What was it like?" he asked hesitantly, not wanting to pry, but he couldn't help wondering. "When you realised?"

"It was..." He paused to try and remember what he'd felt. "Overwhelming but not in a bad way. And it made a little dizzy."

"When you tell her, you should tell her that," he said after a moment. "How are you feeling about telling her?"

"Nervous," he admitted. "I don't want to kriff it up."

"You will not." Karal sounded very confident as he patted Gavin's arm. "You trust her, and she trusts you. Simply be honest and all should be well, even if you are nervous."

"I will," he promised. "How's it going with you?"

"It goes all right." Karal picked up the notebook he'd dropped when Gavin had come in, and smoothed its pages flat. "There is much to do, but," he nodded, "I am well."

"Much to do with stuff at home?" Gavin asked.

"Yes," he said and didn't sigh. He smiled instead, but it was a touch crooked. "I will be returning to Valdemar two days a week from now on."

"What's this trip for?" Gavin asked, seemingly full of questions.

"Attend the Grand Council meeting, liaise with various people, send dispatches to Solaris. With the two worlds travelling at the same time, I have to resume my duties as envoy," he explained. "I'm simply grateful that I'm being permitted to stay."

Altra's tail twitched. "It was my choice," he added. "But I have to meet my responsibilities both as envoy and a student here. So I need to go back regularly."

"Wow," Gavin said, eyes wide. "You're going to be busy. Think you'll be able to find time to sleep?"

"I'm not sure Molly will give me a choice," he said, smiling a little. "She was not at all happy with me for forgetting to eat Wednesday. She made me take a break and go down to visit with Trenor."

"You need to eat," Gavin said. "And you were pretty exhausted the day you got back so you need to sleep too. Can't forget about those."

Karal went pink. "I am sorry for that. I was just...very tired."
