Library: Friday [14.09]

Karal had come prepared this week, where prepared meant more tea and slightly fewer books. Once the library was set up, he opened the doors and settled behind the desk, writing diligently in his notebook.

:You look busy.: Altra strolled in and leapt onto the desk, making himself comfortable.

Karal stared. "Where have you been!"

:Around,: was all the reply he got as Altra rolled onto his side and went to sleep.

"Wonderful," Karal muttered, and went back to writing.

Karal gave her office a quick once over, making sure it was tidy, then opened the window to let some air in.

Karal was still writing, and drinking tea. The tea had gone a bit cold, but he hadn't noticed.

Altra was still fast asleep on the desk.

He's not here, but Altra is, and he's actually awake. He may in fact be batting at the mouse in a half-hearted way.

Karal's back, ~~probably horrible embarrassed from the class~~, but he's off in the stacks, shelving books.

The library is closed for lunch unless you're an aide who's hanging around, the librarian, or someone who might be invited for lunch.

Karal's not here. He's off ~~thinking he's a chicken~~, just checking in on the assembly.

But again, Altra's ~~catting~~ manning the desk, sitting alert and regal, tail curled around his paws.

He might help you. He might not.

Karal is back, hiding behind the desk. Not literally hiding, but he is behind it, and there's a very large stack of books in front of him.

Altra seems to have had some sort of attack, rolling around the floor in silent laughter.

I can't think of a single witty thing to say in the OOC thread.

Have a pony (http://web.mit.edu/cjoye/www/photo/0606Korea/Jeju/day3/j16.jpg) instead.

Thursday arrived with coffee and Oreos for breakfast. Hush. She was being indulgent. She had a stack of paperwork to get through, but she was here if anyone wanted to chat.

"Karal," Gavin said, skittering into the library and making his way to the desk. "I have to talk to you."

Altra yawned and put his paw over his head when Karal dropped his notebook. "Gavin? What's wrong? Are you all right?"

"Hey Altra," Gavin said anyway, smiling at the firecat before turning back to Karal. "What? Oh, yeah, yeah. It's fine. It's better."

It took him a second to get it, then he grinned. "Truly?"

"Yeah." He nodded again and couldn't help smiling. "But, there's another thing now."

Karal did his best to stop grinning and look serious, but he was only moderately successful as he waved at the spare chair behind the desk. "Sit if you like," he offered. "What is it?"

Altra opened one eye, looked at Gavin for a long time, then twitched his whiskers and closed it again.

"Sorry, Altra. Didn't mean to wake you up," Gavin said and came around to sit in the chair that Karal had offered. "I think...I think I'm in love with her."

:You didn't,: Altra replied, sounding gently amused.

Karal glanced at the Firecat then back at Gavin. He'd suspected, but that was not the same as actually hearing it. "Only think?" he asked.

"Oh, okay." And still feeling like he had, he reached out and stroked a hand down Altra's back, both as an apology and to calm himself. "Is there a way to know for sure? This is a first for me. I don't have any basis."

Altra purred, loudly, and said, so only Gavin could hear, :It will work out all right.:

"It has never happened to me at all, and it's not something that can be quantified." Karal placed his elbow on the desk and rested his chin on his hand. "I know you trust her, and that is a large part of it," he said thoughtfully. "The Writ says that real love carries with it the willingness to sacrifice everything for someone out of love, who, out of equal love, would never permit you to, but I am not sure that is helpful."

He smiled at Altra's words before saying, "Someone told me that they knew it was...love because they felt that losing the other person would be major. I trust her. I want her to be happy and I know this is more than just me liking her. It's not casual anymore."

Karal couldn't help smiling. "She makes you feel better about who you are, simply because you are with her? You want what is best for her, even if it were to hurt you?" he asked gently.

:The thought of being without her makes you hurt,: Altra added, lifting his head to look at Gavin. :When you're with her, you feel happy, secure, warm.:

"Yeah," he said in answer to both Karal and Altra. "Yeah, that's it."

"I think it is far past casual," Karal said, nodding, feeling genuinely happy for the first time since he'd left Valdemar. "Have you...does she know?"

:Sounds like love to me.: Altra twitched his whiskers again and to all appearances went back to sleep, but he was still purring.

"I haven't seen her since I realized it," Gavin said, running a hand through his hair. "I'm going to tell her though. I want to tell her."

Karal glanced down. "What was it like?" he asked hesitantly, not wanting to pry, but he couldn't help wondering. "When you realised?"
