After that frakking Top Model class, Lee didn't want to go back to his room just yet. So, he found the cafeteria (someplace new!) and took a seat at one of the tables after grabbing a seled.

He dug the first book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird) he'd taken from the library out of his bag (his name on the cover caught his eye) and started reading.

Mac gave one slightly uncomfortable look at the apparently ill chickens, snagged herself a seled and moved away quickly.

Seeing Lee at a table, she took herself over that way. Someone else who managed to read and eat at the same time. "Mind some company?" she asked.

"Not at all," he said, looking up. "Have a seat."

"Working on your multitasking?" she asked, nodding towards the book in front of him.

"More like getting acquainted with Earth literature," he said and dropped the book against the table.

"You picked a good place to start," Mac commented, noting what it was he was reading.

"You're... new here then?" There was something strangely familiar about him, so she figured she ought to check.

"Brand new," he said and smiled. "Well, two weeks old now, I guess. I'm Lee."

There really was something familiar. Mac figured she was probably just being silly, though and nodded. "Mac," she said. "I'm... quite a bit older than that."

"Been here long?" Lee asked, picking at the salad on his plate. "The school, I mean."

"Year and a half, or thereabouts," Mac told him. "Somehow, it feels like longer, though."

"I guess, the whole 'Earth literature' comment, means you've come a pretty long way?"

"Place called Caprica," Lee told her, waving towards the ceiling. "Very far away. And I forgot almost all my books."

Mac paused, suddenly looking a little more animated. "Caprica?" That was good news to her. "My-- Cally, do you know someone called Cally?"

"I don't," he said apologetically. "You're not the first person to ask me though. She was from Caprica?"

If Mac was a little disappointed by that response she tried not to show it. Caprica was probably a big planet. It'd been a bit of a long shot, really.

Mac nodded. "She got called back there a month or two back."

"I'm sorry," he said, frowning quietly. "She was your friend?"

Mac figured it was probably easier not to explain everything, so she just nodded.

"I think she's... probably not coming back."

"I'm sorry," he said again. "Why was she called back?"

"She was enlisted to do a term in the military there," Mac told him, a little shrug, as if she was trying to make light of it. "Just to pay for dental college."

"Military?" Huh. "I was in military school before getting sent over here. Who knows, we might've passed each other on the way."

Mac gave a little grin. "Maybe," she said. "She was going to be a mechanic on one of the ships out there."

"My father commands one of those ships," Lee told her. "She might--" get stuck "--meet him."

"Or, end up on his ship, I guess," Mac said thoughtfully.

"... What's it like out there?" she asked curiously. Cally had always been a bit vague, probably so as not to worry her.

"In space or on Caprica?" Lee asked.

"I hear Caprica's, kind of, like earth." Mac shrugged, "So, I think I can imagine that. Never been into space, though."

"That's a good comparison," Lee decided after some thought. "A few differences but nothing glaring. Space is huge though. It's so big and encompassing. Full of stars. Caprican space is quiet, for the most part. It's just...it's huge and it seems like it's neverending."
