After that frakking Top Model class, Lee didn't want to go back to his room just yet. So, he found the cafeteria (someplace new!) and took a seat at one of the tables after grabbing a seled.

He dug the first book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird) he'd taken from the library out of his bag (his name on the cover caught his eye) and started reading.

Mac gave one slightly uncomfortable look at the apparently ill chickens, snagged herself a seled and moved away quickly.

Seeing Lee at a table, she took herself over that way. Someone else who managed to read and eat at the same time. "Mind some company?" she asked.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not at all," he said, looking up. "Have a seat."

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Working on your multitasking?" she asked, nodding towards the book in front of him.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"More like getting acquainted with Earth literature," he said and dropped the book against the table.

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"You picked a good place to start," Mac commented, noting what it was he was reading.

"You're... new here then?" There was something strangely familiar about him, so she figured she ought to check.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Brand new," he said and smiled. "Well, two weeks old now, I guess. I'm Lee."

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
There really was something familiar. Mac figured she was probably just being silly, though and nodded. "Mac," she said. "I'm... quite a bit older than that."

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Been here long?" Lee asked, picking at the salad on his plate. "The school, I mean."

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Year and a half, or thereabouts," Mac told him. "Somehow, it feels like longer, though."

"I guess, the whole 'Earth literature' comment, means you've come a pretty long way?"

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Place called Caprica," Lee told her, waving towards the ceiling. "Very far away. And I forgot almost all my books."

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Mac paused, suddenly looking a little more animated. "Caprica?" That was good news to her. "My-- Cally, do you know someone called Cally?"

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't," he said apologetically. "You're not the first person to ask me though. She was from Caprica?"

After dealing with stairs to go down to get to class, Adah wasn't exactly up to return to her room, either. In fact, she planned to avoid the stairs for as long as she could, and figured some food might be good. She limped up to the line, stared at the abundance of what seemed close enough to actual meat for a while before taking a little bit, and then started to limp toward a spot to sit down, tray balance in the crook of her left arm. She'd like to one day maybe balance it on her head, but she knew that wasn't exactly going to happen ever.

She stopped, with a slight squeak of the sneaker on her dragging foot, when she spotted the Eel over at a table reading, but she also saw that he already had company, so she settled down quietly in a seat nearby, trying to focus on stabbing lettuce with a fork.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Proving that he was an excellent reader, Lee was about ten pages into the book and still trying to figure out what was going on for the most part.

He'd get better. Hopefully.

During a pause, he found himself looking up and spotted someone familiar. With a grin, he said, "Trying to make it hard for me to talk to you?"

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah's left shoulder darted up and her eyes immediately turned distinctly away. Clearly, that wasn't the case at all; if that was the case, Adah would have taken her lunch elsewhere, but she would admit that she hadn't expected to be noticed. Now that she had, she wasn't sure what to make of it, and nibbled, eyes away, at a small piece of chicken. She pressed her lips together as she drew in a breath before chancing to drift her eyes in the direction of the Eel. If anyone asked, she could just claim that she was only curious about what it was he was reading.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hi," he said quietly, small smile on his face, when she looked towards him. And then held the book up, front cover towards her. "Good start?"

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah lifted her hand, a silent hello back kept as close to her body as possible. She dropped it to settle in her lap and her head tilted as she strained to see the repositioned book a little bit better. She'd never head of it, but it instantly put to mind red feathers and the rantings of a hellbent parrot named after the oldest man in the Bible who died too soon, screaming out Piss off, Methuselah! God is great, Sister! She grinned a little, shrugged her shoulder, wondering how to tell him that he should let her know how it was when he was finished.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I like the poetry better so far," he said, turning the book back over and scanning the front cover again. "This one's a little harder to start. Did you wanna look at it?"

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah considered the offer carefully, shifting slightly in her seat. She did want to have a look, but she didn't want to inconvenience Lee at all by having him bring it to her. She could go over there, of course, but that meant moving and moving was problematic. Perhaps not so much problematic as it was that she wasn't feeling much like having to pathetically limp over to his table, just for a book. It was quite a conundrum, really. Murd nun ocaet iuq....

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Without really thinking about it, Lee stood up and brought the tray and book over towards the area she was sitting in.

Before sitting, though, he asked, "Think I could join you?"

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
...Well, that conundrum was put to rest easily. Closing her eyes for a moment with an attempt to get over how ridiculous she was sometimes, Adah shook her head and tried to square herself toward Lee a little. The body followed, but her head didn't, eyes still looking down even as she nodded a little. Her left hand darted behind her neck slowly, rubbing it as if to encourage the muscles to work a little better toward her intended means. She managed to coax it into tilting toward the Eel and give a small, tilted smile. She held out her hand, so that she could have the book.

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks," he said before setting his tray down and dropping into a seat. He turned the book over, cover up, and passed it towards her.

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Absently, Adah slid her tray aside so that the book could take the foremost area in front of her. First, she inspected the spine of it critically before thunking it down on the spine. She meticulously danced her finger over the pages until she found the exact center of the book, and opened it up, letting the even halves of it fall open as she peered through the words at very middle of a book. And then she found the first page; read the first line. The back page, read the last, put the two together, backwards forwards, and then she carefully flipped to the very front of the book, to see when it was first published. Her finger hovered over the date. 1960. It was published while she was in Africa. A sudden surge to covet the book for herself was strong, but she'd noticed the markings that indicated it was a book belonging to the library, so she didn't try. Maybe they had another copy she could covet on Wednesday. This book, as well as 45 years...forty-five!...of literature to catch up on...

[identity profile] stupid-toasters.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He watched her movements quietly, food forgotten, because he'd never seen anyone examine books like she did. It was fascinating in a way, unfamiliar in another way and he could only watch.

"I got it from the library," he told her quietly. "There are lots of books there. And I have no idea what anyone of them are like. I tried reading this one out loud yesterday."
