Mac paused, suddenly looking a little more animated. "Caprica?" That was good news to her. "My-- Cally, do you know someone called Cally?"

"I don't," he said apologetically. "You're not the first person to ask me though. She was from Caprica?"

If Mac was a little disappointed by that response she tried not to show it. Caprica was probably a big planet. It'd been a bit of a long shot, really.

Mac nodded. "She got called back there a month or two back."

"I'm sorry," he said, frowning quietly. "She was your friend?"

Mac figured it was probably easier not to explain everything, so she just nodded.

"I think she's... probably not coming back."

"I'm sorry," he said again. "Why was she called back?"

"She was enlisted to do a term in the military there," Mac told him, a little shrug, as if she was trying to make light of it. "Just to pay for dental college."

"Military?" Huh. "I was in military school before getting sent over here. Who knows, we might've passed each other on the way."

Mac gave a little grin. "Maybe," she said. "She was going to be a mechanic on one of the ships out there."

"My father commands one of those ships," Lee told her. "She might--" get stuck "--meet him."

"Or, end up on his ship, I guess," Mac said thoughtfully.

"... What's it like out there?" she asked curiously. Cally had always been a bit vague, probably so as not to worry her.

"In space or on Caprica?" Lee asked.

"I hear Caprica's, kind of, like earth." Mac shrugged, "So, I think I can imagine that. Never been into space, though."

"That's a good comparison," Lee decided after some thought. "A few differences but nothing glaring. Space is huge though. It's so big and encompassing. Full of stars. Caprican space is quiet, for the most part. It's just...it's huge and it seems like it's neverending."

Mac thought about that for a moment, twirling a piece of lettuice around her fork. "Sounds kind of lonely out there," she said eventually. "Pretty, I'd imagine. But, so quiet."

"Yeah," Lee admitted, leaning back in his chair. "It can be. Depends on if you bring a friend along, I guess."

"I guess, if you're out there, you've probably got lots of other people in the same situation at least." Mac nibbled at her salad.

"Must be interesting... getting to do that kind of travel."

"I haven't really," he admitted. "I want to but I haven't. It takes you away from your family though." He had experience with that one. "Which isn't always good."

"Didn't coming here take you away from your family?" Mac said carefully. "I mean, it's a pretty long way for you..."

"Good point," he said ruefully. "Guess I can't really talk then."

"I... can't really either," Mac admitted, poking at her seled again. "I picked this school, partly because it was about as far from my family as I could get."

"Another planet wasn't really an option for me," she added.

"You're still here," he said and twirled his fork idly. "Must be something good here."

Mac shrugged. "It's a good place. Good people."

"Okay, a lack of freaky invasions would be nice..." she admitted. "But other than that."

"I've heard the stories," he laughed. "I'm sure they pale in comparison the real thing."

"People like to freak you out in the first couple of weeks," Mac said with a slight nod. "First day here, people kept telling me there was people in the food." Yeah, cause that's the one to tell him when he's sat in the cafeteria.
