Library [07/14]

Dinosaurs were not part of the craze in her timestream where people brought extinct animals back through cloning. Thursday, however, had dealt with dinosaurs in her time inside fiction and didn't particularly feel like trying to negotiate with sharp teeth this time. So she packed up Friday and Pickwick, locked up the house, left a note for her housemates letting them know what was going on and where she was going and headed to the library. Friday would have been out of there and off to Mrs Bradshaw's in as much time as it takes to say 'I was in a long, dark, wood-panelled corridor', but the BookWorld was dealing with its own problems right now.

Fairly certain that the dinosaurs wouldn't be able to read, Thursday closed the doors up and put a note on the front saying 'open, knock or shout first', put Friday, his toys and Pickwick down where she could see them and set about trying to find out how exactly dinosaurs had shown up overnight without a fuss and how to get them to go away again.

"What?" Karal blinked at her, still distracted from nearly being eaten. "Oh, I am sorry. Yes, he is all right. Trenor is a horse, not a human. He is safely in the garage now."

"Oh thank heavens. Are there *very* many out there?" Evie gave him an anxious look, and pointed at the encyclopedias. "Which one was it?"

His eyes lit up and he reached for a book, flicking through it to try and find a picture. "There were several at the stables. Molly dealt with them, but they were hunting together, which means there is likely more of them."

"Oh, this isn't good at all." Evie chewed on a pen and shook her head. "They should all be extinct! It could be either magic or time-travel, if it's not just a few isolated individuals wandering in the Preserve." She gave Karal a worried look. "Molly is well?"

"Molly is well," he replied. "She has gone to fight, if necessary." Karal turned the book around so she could see it, open at a picture. "I believe this was what they were, deinonychus. But there is nothing here about how to banish them."

"Drat. They're not magic, so I don't suppose there would be." Evie sat down, biting her lip. "At least not in this book. But oh, this is bad-- I was so hoping that the Vice-Principal was exaggerating, and it was only vegetarian dinosaurs who'd arrived. These are meat-eaters." She gulped. "Well, you guessed that."

"Yes, the way they were eyeing Trenor made that very clear," he said with a small smile. "But they are simply animals, albeit large and vicious ones, so there must be a way to be rid of them."

He really wished Altra were here.

"I don't think we want a very large meteor to hit the Earth. That's a bit overdramatic, I think. Even if it did work umpty-million years ago, it's not like we have to kill an entire planet of them, and they're so *big*," Evie said anxiously. "And the teeth!" She paused. "Not very helpful... perhaps magic books? Maybe they'd have something?"

Karal stared at her, not understanding most of what she was talking about, until she got to the teeth, at which point he nodded. "Or books on hunting large animals. I imagine the weapons here are more advanced than in my world."

He really, really wished Altra were here.

"Oh, of course! How silly of me. That's a much better plan," Evie said happily. "Elephant guns, that's what we need. Possibly cannons. Oh! Explosives!" She bounced in her seat, beginning to get excited. "Professor Alianne almost certainly has some! She teaches the class! And Professor Deadpool is ever so likely to have large guns and grenades!"

Sunlord, where was Altra?

"Not that they would be of much-- " use to us, he was going to say, but he was interrupted by the arrival of Altra, who leapt onto the table and sauntered down the length of it to stare at him.

:What is going on, Karal? There's nasty creatures everywhere. It's a madhouse out there.:

"Eeep!"

Being rather het up, Evie went sprawling backwards in her chair as a cat suddenly appeared on the table in front of her, ending up on the floor. "They're attacking!"

Re: Morning

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Altra gave her a long, cool look before turning back to Karal. :Explain. Or no, just think it. I'll find out for myself.:

"It is all right, Evie. It is just Altra, you have seen him before in class. He must have found his way to the library." While he spoke, he ran through everything that had happened so far, so the 'cat could read what he chose.

:This is not good. At least you're somewhere safe.:

Re: Morning

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie scrambled up from the floor, mildly embarrassed, and gave Altra a curious look. "Right. Of course. Your cat." She took a breath, calming down. "Lord, I do hate invasions. Although I think dinosaurs are better than trolls, really."

Re: Morning

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Altra glared at her briefly. :These are bad enough. It doesn't matter what's worse.:

Having seen one up close while it tried to eat him and Trenor, who would have succeeded if not for Molly, Karal thought the dinosaurs were more than bad enough. "Hopefully trolls will not follow. Evie, would you excuse me for a moment?"

Re: Morning

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course," Evie sat back down, and sighed, looking at the books. "I'm afraid this isn't going to be solved any time soon."

Re: Morning

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Altra leapt off the table, and with a quick smile and nod at Evie, Karal followed him to a secluded corner. "Altra, I want you to go and find Molly. Make sure she is safe."

Re: Morning

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Tail lashing, the 'cat looked mutinous. :No. I have to protect you. I'm not going anywhere.:

Re: Morning

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"You said it yourself, this place is safe, and she protected me this morning. If it wasn't for her, well..."

He trailed off, looking imploringly at the 'cat, who sighed. :Very well. But you stay here.

"I promise." With one last look, Altra disappeared (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/1871437.html?thread=86150477#t86150477), and Karal made his way back to Evie.

Re: Morning

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Evie was worrying at a thumbnail as she read about Tyrannosaurus Rex, and raptors, and oh dear. She smiled as Karal returned, and closed the book. "Perhaps we need to look for information about appearances on the island? The histories, maybe?"

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I think that sounds like a very good place to start," he said, pushing his worry about Molly away for later. Altra would find her, and if necessary could bring her here.
