Arts & Crafts 3, Tuesday Afternoon, Main Campfire

This afternoon Steve was standing over a table of useless junk. At each of the tables for workshoppers were glue, glitter, paint, and pipe cleaners.

"Today we're going to work on improvisational art," Steve said. "I've...handwavily appropriated some items from a store in town." He'd tried to pay, but there didn't seem to be anyone to pay. "You are to incorporate at least one of them into your project. Make whatever you want. Go wild. Have fun."

After a moment of silence, he added as a sort of footnote, "The theme of your project should be, 'Why the Superhuman Registration Act is a bad idea and will never work.'"

Cassie was fuming, doing her best not to cry. She grabbed the 'going out of business sign', and first painted a matte red layer across it. After that dried, she merely painted some words in white.

'Because Selfish Heroes Can't Accept Change'

And as an added thought, she added in blue paint at the bottom:

'And Get Goliath Killed.'

"I think interesting interpretations are something you'd be familiar with," Cassie said.

"Just... never sure what made you think fighting the system made us good guys," Cassie said.

"Because you kidnapped me and told me to fight for you before I had a chance to think about it for myself," Cassie said.

From the across the campfire, Animal saw Cassie for apparently the first time.

His eyes widened.

His breathing became labored.

And next thing you know he was running toward Cassie.

"WOO-MAN! WOOOOOOO-MAN!"

Naminé wasn't going to say anything, except ... except that the professor last week had taken a moment to tell her that everyone mattered. Even people that weren't really people, like her. Except maybe she was. But more importantly, if she mattered, then other people had to.

So she drew a deep breath, screwed up her courage, and then said softly, "It isn't selfish. To not want everyone knowing who you are. What you are. Everyone has the right to just live."

"Is that what Mr. Rogers told you it was about?" Cassie said. "Because it wasn't. It was about people thinking they could break the law because they were different. That because we had powers he had the right to take the law into our own hands."

Naminé lifted a shoulder. "He just said that people who were different had to register. And those that refused were put in a special jail."

"And that's not the real story," Cassie said. "Only criminals are getting jailed now. If you don't want to fight for justice, they just make sure you're not going to hurt anyone and you're let go. People who want guns have to have licenses. People born with even more power should have to do the same."

Naminé looked down for a moment. "People aren't weapons. They shouldn't be treated as such. Or used as ones, either."

"I could squash you like a bug, right now," Cassie said. "But I won't, because I learned how to handle my powers. But some kid named Southpaw demolished her school because they re-instituted school uniforms. That's the type of thing they're trying to stop."

Naminé flinched slightly. "People will use their powers how they choose. If you can learn to control them, you can learn to wield them, for good or for bad. The choice always exists. If you're threatening me, that only proves the point."

And she softly added, "Besides, there's a line for that already."

"What the hell kind of change is being forced to do something by people who have no clue what it's like to be what you are?" Alec asked disdainfully.

"Forced? What kind of world should people who are different be exempt from the law? Did he tell you about the New Warriors? How they decided to play hero for their reality TV show and got an entire school blown up?" Cassie said.

"Who were the rules made by? Mutants? Superheroes? Or humans who are too afraid of their damn shadows to realize that not everyone has to be bound by exactly the same things they are - that they can't because you're inviting bad feelings on both sides by sticking a square peg in a round hole," Alec asked, scowling. He might have had some strong feelings about this, yes.

"We have to be bound by the same rules," Cassie said. "We can't think ourselves better. That leads to mutant supremacy or people bombing buses full of mutant kids all over again. The registration act is to protect everyone. Heroes, people, everyone."

Alec stared at her a second. "No. I was made by the government, and they don't even extend the courtesy of thinking I am a person. I don't have any rights, but I'm supposedly bound by their rules. Why should I bother following them when I don't get the consideration that any person not made in a test tube gets?"

"You're not from my world," Cassie said. "So your government isn't mine."

Carmela is frowning at Cassie's project. "How could regulating what people *are* possibly be a good thing?" she asks.

"Because for the past fifty years people like me thought we could break the law because we're different," Cassie said. "And we can't live like that anymore."

Charlie didn't say anything. She'd already expressed her opinion with her art project.

She did keep flinching off and on at stuff Cassie said, though, as she carefully layered more glue and glitter on her Death Camp.
