Arts & Crafts 3, Tuesday Afternoon, Main Campfire

This afternoon Steve was standing over a table of useless junk. At each of the tables for workshoppers were glue, glitter, paint, and pipe cleaners.

"Today we're going to work on improvisational art," Steve said. "I've...handwavily appropriated some items from a store in town." He'd tried to pay, but there didn't seem to be anyone to pay. "You are to incorporate at least one of them into your project. Make whatever you want. Go wild. Have fun."

After a moment of silence, he added as a sort of footnote, "The theme of your project should be, 'Why the Superhuman Registration Act is a bad idea and will never work.'"

"Is that what Mr. Rogers told you it was about?" Cassie said. "Because it wasn't. It was about people thinking they could break the law because they were different. That because we had powers he had the right to take the law into our own hands."

Naminé lifted a shoulder. "He just said that people who were different had to register. And those that refused were put in a special jail."

"And that's not the real story," Cassie said. "Only criminals are getting jailed now. If you don't want to fight for justice, they just make sure you're not going to hurt anyone and you're let go. People who want guns have to have licenses. People born with even more power should have to do the same."

Naminé looked down for a moment. "People aren't weapons. They shouldn't be treated as such. Or used as ones, either."

"I could squash you like a bug, right now," Cassie said. "But I won't, because I learned how to handle my powers. But some kid named Southpaw demolished her school because they re-instituted school uniforms. That's the type of thing they're trying to stop."

Naminé flinched slightly. "People will use their powers how they choose. If you can learn to control them, you can learn to wield them, for good or for bad. The choice always exists. If you're threatening me, that only proves the point."

And she softly added, "Besides, there's a line for that already."

"Sorry that... that wasn't what I meant," Cassie said. "I didn't mean to threaten you. I just meant that I am a weapon. I joined the registration because I didn't want people hurt. But he," Cassie pointed at Steve, "He wanted a fight. He didn't want to talk about things, negotiate, nothing. He wanted a war on his hands because that's all he knows how to deal with."

"I was used as a weapon against someone once. They would do it again if they could. They're looking for me. And because of them, someone else is looking for me - one who thinks he's on the side of good. If he finds me, he'll kill me. So that it won't happen again. He's tried once."

Naminé looked away. "How long before your government decides someone is too dangerous to live?"

"They can't do that," Cassie said. "People are arrested, put on trial, all of that. We're not in some scary Big Brother world. It's America, land of truth and justice."

Naminé shook her head, and turned to leave. Then she stopped and looked back again. "There will be someone that your government isn't prepared to handle, who comes in for registration and is deemed too dangerous to leave again. It won't be you. You who are trusting the government with that person's existence. I hope they deserve it. Most organizations, I fear, don't."
