Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

Around dinner time on Friday, the main campfire was transformed. Leis and grass skirts were available to all. A pig was roasting kabobs. There was Hawaiian music playing from somewhere. There was also a limbo stick of doom. If you lost, you died.

Okay, that was just Drax's hope. He couldn't make it happen in reality. Woe.

And now she was blushing. "Truly?" she asked, prodding the flowers again. "The flowers are very beautiful. I've never seen this sort before."

"Yeah, truly," Seely replied. He reached out to touch a flower. "My knowledge of flowers extends about as far as daisies, daffodils, and roses, but I think they might be some kind of orchid or hibiscus, maybe?"

"I don't really know or care what they're called," Aravis admitted, holding still with her eyes fixed on his hand. "But thank you. You look very..." Just about any compliment she could fathom seemed inappropriate. "...much like yourself."

"Thanks, I try to."

Any moment Seely was going to move his hand further away from Aravis's cheek.

Annnnnnny moment.

Further, totally not closer.

Really.

Aravis's eyes were still trained on his hand in...well, she'd just call that feeling 'fascination.' "It suits you," she said absently. She had to focus on something else. "So what does one do at a luau?"

Wonderful. What an intelligent, insightful question.

"Eat, dance, limbo." The backs of Seely's knuckles gently brushed along Aravis's cheek. "Spend time with people they like."

"What's a limbo?" she asked softly, still perfectly immobile.

Seely hadn't really noticed when he'd moved closer to Aravis. "It's a pole, you duck under it. Backwards."

And that made her laugh, albeit a bit nervously. "Why?"

He was very close. She should step back.

She would in a second. Probably.

Seely grinned. "You know? I don't have the slightest clue."

Almost without thinking he bent down to kiss her.

And it would have been so, so easy to close her eyes and go with it.

But at the last second, something made her take a step back and say, "Did you hear that?" in a very concerned voice as she looked over in...some random direction.

Seely turned his head to follow Aravis's line of sight. "Hear what?"

"There was a...noise," she said lamely.

Seely blinked. "Huh."

"Strange," Aravis commented, trying not to look as nervous as she felt. "Perhaps it was someone...tripping over the limbo."

"Guess someone wasn't as flexible as they thought."

"Possibly," Aravis agreed, clasping her hands behind her back. "What a strange activity."

"Tell the truth, I think it's just an excuse for guys to be ridiculous."

Because Seely never was, oh, no.

"And I'm certain you're much too dignified to ever participate in something like that."

"Totally."

So Aravis could expect to see him doing it before the night was off.

"You're very solemn," Aravis said, nodding and smirking just a little. "Somber. Serious."

"That's me," Seely said, deadpan. "Stoic."

"Unsmiling and lacking entirely in humor."

"Dour, dull, boring."

"Stodgy, prudish --" She snorted a little at that one.
