Mindful of what their Dad had said to him, Dean headed directly to the library after leaving Dad's office.

"I knew I'd find you here," he observed when he came in and saw Sammy at the desk.

"It's Tuesday," Sam replied. "Where else would I be?"

"Oh, I don't know.... resting maybe? Taking it easy after getting your brains whacked?"

Sam sighed and rolled his eyes a little. "I am taking it easy, Dean. I haven't done much of anything today except sit here and read, and talk to Dawn. That's restful, isn't it?"

Dean frowned a little. "Don't know about the reading with a concussion..."

"It's not strenuous," Sam argued. "I'm taking breaks, I'm going slowly...why do you act like I'm not able to take care of myself?"

"It's not that. It's my job to take care of you," Dean told him matter of factly. "Always has been. I can't forget that."

"I thought we'd gotten past this. You don't have to take care of me, Dean. I'm a big boy, fully capable of taking care of myself."

"Except when you're not."

"Yeah, well this isn't one of those times."

"Sammy, two nights ago I got a call that you were in the clinic unconscious. That isn't exactly being a poster boy for not needing someone to look out for you," Dean pointed out.

"I don't need someone to look out for me all the time," Sam replied. "Look, you came when I was in the clinic, and you stayed with me the whole night, and you made sure that I didn't get sick in class, and I appreciate all of that, I really do. But that doesn't mean I need you watching over me every day now."

"If I'd been watching out for you Sunday it might not have happened," Dean insisted.

Sam gave Dean a weary look. "You didn't even know I needed to be watched. Hindsight only works so well."

"That would've been so much fucking comfort if you hadn't woke up."

"It should have been comfort," Sam replied. "You didn't know something was going to happen. Hell, I didn't even realize something was wrong, and I'm the one who got possessed. You can't blame yourself for everything that happens to me. That's crazy."

Dean shook his head once in quick negation. "I'm supposed to look after you. From the day you were born it's been my job. Dad said-"

"Dad said you had to look after me - when I was a baby," Sam said sharply. "I'm going to be 15 in a week. I'm old enough to look after myself, whether you want to accept that or not."

"Dad said I had to look after you half an hour ago!"

"What?" Sam said, suddenly wishing he could yell without giving himself a headache. "Why did he say that?"

Dean gave him an 'Are you kidding?' look. "Why do you think?"

"Oh for god's sake, you're both out of your minds," Sam said. "So what do you want to do, Dean? Tell me how you want to look after me, because I think I could use a good laugh right now."

Dean may have flinched a little, but his voice just sounded exasperated when he replied. "Yeah, because I've done such a sucky job of it all these years it's just one big laugh riot. It's so funny that I want to make sure nothing happens to you, that the idea of you getting hurt or worse freaks me out like nothing else. Go ahead, laugh it up."

Sam sighed, trying to collect his thoughts before he said something that would really hurt Dean. "You've done an awesome job taking care of me, you know that. And you should also know that I don't want to freak you out. But watching me like a hawk isn't going to keep me from getting hurt."

"Maybe it's something I need to do, okay? It was two days ago, Sammy. Two days. How would you have felt if I told you to go away and stop bothering me right after I got back from Manticore?"
