Ethics [Monday, April 23, 5th period]

Anakin, for once, looked well-rested and relaxed as the class came into the room. "For your final project," he began, "you'll contrast what you learned taking care of eggs versus actual, live younglings." He smiled. "Absolutely no points will be given if all you can come up with is that one doesn't run around or the other one doesn't fit into the refrigerator. What would you have done if the younglings that appeared last week had been here to stay permanently? How would that have affected your summer plans? Or life post-graduation?"

He pointed to a student at random. "Your final discussion begins now."

Dean kept a worried eye on Sammy. "How you feeling?"

"I'm fine," Sam said smoothly. "How many times do you anticipate asking me that over the next few days?"

"Until you answer me without lying," Dean shot back without missing a beat. "You're going to go back to your room and rest after this class, right?"

"Yes, Dad," Sam answered obediently, although he was certainly looking forward to resting. "And if I feel worse, I'll go back to the clinic."

"You probably should still be there -- or at least back in your room. This is the kind of thing you're supposed to miss class for."

"If this was any other class, I might be willing to skip. But it's finals week! I can't miss any of my classes," Sam argued, resting his head on his arm.

"Yeah, because teachers have never offered makeup tests, especially not if the student looks like he's about to puke all over the desk and then pass out."

"I'm not going to puke," Sam said. At least, he didn't feel like that at the moment. "And there's no time for makeup tests. It might hurt my grade."

"My brain is fine. I'm not doing anything strenuous. I'm just sitting here. It's like I'm resting, only I'm not in bed."

After talking to Anakin, Zuko moved to the back of the room and took a seat as he waited for class to begin.

Katara hadn't listened to the radio since early last week so the last thing she was prepared for when she walked into the classroom was Zuko sitting at the back of the room like he'd never left. She stopped in her tracks and for a long second considered simply turning around to leave.

But she didn't want to annoy Anakin and she wasn't entirely sure that was the best move. So she found her own seat. That it was not so far away from Zuko's as to prevent conversation was entirely a fluke. Really.

Zuko might have sat up a bit straighter once Katara entered the room. He rested his hands on the desk in front of him and stared down at the top of it. There should be workshops on how to act after your enemy saved your life and hugged you.

She looked straight ahead, hands clenched, not wanting to say the first thing and get it thrown back at her. She still was shocked he was not dead - or at least back in the Earth Kingdom.

Zuko spent most of his class trying to pretend that he wasn't paying close attention to what Katara was doing. He still didn't know what he was supposed to say or do, but when Katara started to get up once class finished, he knew he didn't have much time to make up his mind.

"Katara," he spoke softly to draw her attention as he rose from his chair, but he didn't make any move to get close to her.

She turned like she hadn't known he was behind her for most of the class. "Zuko. I - didn't know you were back."

"No," he agreed and glanced towards the door as if he'd rather be walking through it right now.

"I owe you," he said softly, not risking anyone overhearing them.

And that was quite possibly the last thing she'd ever thought she'd hear him say. She blinked and then looked down at her books and replied as quietly. "You don't owe me for healing you."

"I do," he argued because it was more than the healing. "You... You don't have to worry. It won't happen again."

Katara paused for a second then nodded. "I'm not worried," she said, fingers going back to her waterskin unconsciously. "You got lucky."

When Molly saw Zuko, she grinned brightly. Then she remembered the circumstances of his leaving and glanced at Katara to see her reaction.

Seeing as how Katara wasn't visibly seething, Molly grinned at Zuko again and waved before she went to sit on the other side of Katara.

Zuko possibly nodded, but it was a bit hard to tell as he was doing his best to not look at Katara too much.

Katara gave Molly a small smile but didn't actually say anything.
