Ethics [Monday, April 23, 5th period]

Anakin, for once, looked well-rested and relaxed as the class came into the room. "For your final project," he began, "you'll contrast what you learned taking care of eggs versus actual, live younglings." He smiled. "Absolutely no points will be given if all you can come up with is that one doesn't run around or the other one doesn't fit into the refrigerator. What would you have done if the younglings that appeared last week had been here to stay permanently? How would that have affected your summer plans? Or life post-graduation?"

He pointed to a student at random. "Your final discussion begins now."

"I learned that being a parent is freaking hard as hell," John said. "And it's filled with unexpected situations that have no correct answer. I learned that the bed becomes a little smaller, the food has to be rationed a bit more, and that I could smile that much even after everything that's happened this year. I learned that children like chocolate and hate timeouts and that the sad, puppy eyes a child can pull off would make do just about anything."

And then he sat down.

Anakin smiled at John and scrawled something on the pad he was holding in his pad. "Excellent. D'Argo was a great kid. Umberta...not so much."

Dean Winchester

"I helped look after Sammy a lot when we were younger so it wasn't really my first experience being responsible for a kid. Kids. If they had stayed, I guess it would've depended on what Fandom and the school would have let us do as to how my plans would've changed. If we were allowed to continue here, even with the kids, I don't think things would've changed all that much. Might have been some fine tuning in living arrangements and all, depending on if the school would let me keep the kids in the dorms or not, but..."

Dean kept a worried eye on Sammy. "How you feeling?"

"I'm fine," Sam said smoothly. "How many times do you anticipate asking me that over the next few days?"

"Until you answer me without lying," Dean shot back without missing a beat. "You're going to go back to your room and rest after this class, right?"

"Yes, Dad," Sam answered obediently, although he was certainly looking forward to resting. "And if I feel worse, I'll go back to the clinic."

Anakin smiled. "Younglings do change everything," he said. "Even if mine isn't so young. I'm sure the school would've allowed everyone to continue, but it might've been a while before some sort of day care was set up. You would've been okay giving up social time to take care of them after the novelty and sugar bribes wore off?"

He was sure he knew what the answer would be, but it never hurt to check.

"You probably should still be there -- or at least back in your room. This is the kind of thing you're supposed to miss class for."

"If this was any other class, I might be willing to skip. But it's finals week! I can't miss any of my classes," Sam argued, resting his head on his arm.

Sam was perhaps a little more rambly than usual. Stupid head injury.

"Taking care of the egg was easier than taking care of a real child, because eggs don't need to be entertained or fed, and watching the egg was easier because it couldn't walk away, and Katara and I are smart and each found ways to keep Benedict from rolling away, so he was safe.

"And if our kids had stayed...well, I think Dean and I have kind of a unique situation, 'cause our Dad is here and he seemed to like playing with his potential grandkids, so if I needed to study or wanted to go out with Dawn or something, I think he'd help. But I know things would be harder, even with his help, and I think pretty much everything about my life would change. But now, I think I'd make a better dad than I would have expected a week ago though."

Dean nodded. "I've done it before," he said, glancing in Sammy's direction. "Family's more important than social time."

"Yeah, because teachers have never offered makeup tests, especially not if the student looks like he's about to puke all over the desk and then pass out."

Anakin made some notes on the piece of paper in his lap. "Thank you, Dean," he said with a smile.

Anakin stared at him. "Breathe, Sam," he said. "Are you all right?"
