Library [04/17]

Sam managed to pass all of his kids off to other people to watch during his library shift, except for his Ethics egg baby. But, he didn't think he had to worry much about Benedict making a mess.

[Open! Please do not break the egg baby, but feel free to break Sam. *g* I will be on slowplay during the day.]

Maggie pouted, then added puppy dog eyes. "I'm almost ten." In another two years, maybe. "Is that old enough?"

Those puppy dog eyes were going to be the end of him, he was certain. "Nope. Fourteen and up only," he said. "There's lots of other books in the library for you to look at though."

"Where are the fairy tales?" She asked, frowning a little. Maybe the other kids would help her break into Special Collections later. She just knew the good books were in there.

"They're over here," Sam said, more than happy to usher her away from Special Collections, to the fairy tales shelves. "You can look at any of these that you want to."

"Where are the ones where the bad guys win?" She liked to see what the good guys did wrong.

Sam looked at her oddly. "I don't know if we have any of those. I think the good guys usually win, like they're supposed to."

"But nobody wins all the time," she argued, "'cept maybe you and Mommy and Uncle Dean."

"That's because we're the good guys. And good ladies, in your Mom's case," Sam said. "The good guys always win." That might not have been true, but he didn't think Maggie was old enough to know the reality of that.

"I'm a good guy," she declared, standing on her tippy toes to reach a book with a pretty green cover. Maybe it had dragons in it.

"You don't want to be a good lady?" Sam teased.

Maggie shook her head. "Ladies can't get dirty, so they don't have as much fun. Mommy says being a lady's boring."

"You are definitely your mother's daughter," Sam said, laughing. "Not that that's a bad thing, of course. But you know, most boys like ladies..." He trailed off, eying her.

She made a face. "Boys are stupid. I'm not gonna date 'till I'm a hundred."

She'd be taking that back in a couple of years.

Sam practically beamed at Maggie, and went over to pull her into a hug. "That's just what Daddies like to hear. Good girl," he said.

Maggie hugged him back around the waist. "That's what you always say, Daddy."

"Well, then it must be true. I wouldn't say it so much if it wasn't."

"Is there a dragon book?" Maggie shifted her weight from foot to foot and let go of Sam, "Someday I'm gonna write a book about dragons where they win and get to eat all the people."

"Are you going to name the people getting eaten after people you don't like? That would be my suggestion," Sam said. "The dragon books are further down here," he added, pointing.

"Oooh, can I?" She got down on her hands and knees until she found the ones that looked interesting, then plopped down on her butt on the floor. "Like if I get a little brother and don't like him, he can be eaten by dragons?"

And again, Sam had to go with giving his daughter a strange look. "I don't know about that. First of all, little brothers are awesome. And secondly, I don't think you'll be getting one anytime soon. But if you do, you should probably have the dragons eat someone else."

"No, probably no little brothers or sisters for a little while longer," Maggie told him with a big sigh. Everyone else had them, but no, she had to be different, "I don't like my science teacher..."

"Now you make it sound like you want a brother or sister," Sam said. "You don't like science?"

"I want one, but I want to have a backup plan in case I get a bad one. And I like science, but Mrs. Springer keeps telling me I have way too much imagination and that there's no such thing as the ghosts and werewolves and vampires," she pouted, "Stupid teacher."

"Hey, you turned out pretty good. So, odds are, your mom and I wouldn't do too badly with a sibling," Sam pointed out, and boy, was that weird to think about. "As for your teacher, you've got to remember, there are a lot of people who won't believe in that kind of stuff until they're face to face with it."

"I knoooooow," she sighed, stacking a couple of books on top of each other, "but just because she doesn't know any better doesn't make me wrong."
