Folklore and Fact: Mystical Artifacts, Week 13 [Thurs/2nd Period]

The display screens today were going through a series of images that some students might recognize as pictures related to the mythical continent of Atlantis.

"Atlantis," Sakura said once the students had filed in, passing around a handout. "The earliest known references to this continent date back to Plato’s accounts from 360 BC. Later accounts of it believe it to be the archetypal utopia – the perfect advanced society."

"Orichalcum, the legendary metal of Atlantis, is held to be extremely valuable, second only to gold. We have not actually obtained any yet, although we do believe that it’s likely to exist." Sakura went into a lengthy discussion of Plato’s description of Atlantis, and concluded, "Many adventurers have dreamed of finding the lost continent of Atlantis. No one has succeeded yet that I know of, but I do believe that it’s a worthy goal. And dreams are a crucial part of adventuring, should you choose to make that your career."

"So my question to you: do you believe Atlantis exists? Do you think searching for it is a worthy goal?" She glanced at Evie. “If not, what do you think is a worthwhile, motivating dream for an adventurer to have?"

[OOC: Class Info Post. Sorry for the lame class but I’m still recovering from moving this weekend –- no interaction from me until after about 5:30 PST since I’m still sort of lying low during the day. OCD is up!]

Tori took notes on the lecture, realizing she really wouldn't be surprised if Atlantis did exist.

Hooray for being in class this week, and not a sugar glider.

Sam took quite a few notes, thinking about how awesome it would be if Atlantis really did exist.

Being of a sea fairing people, Pippi has heard quite a lot about Atlantis.

But it's a pretty good story, and everybody tells it a little different. So she pays attention.

Dawn took a lot of notes, as usual. She wasn't sure Atlantis existed, but that didn't mean she didn't want to be prepared if it suddenly showed up.

Evie took industrious notes, and looked inquisitively at the Orichalcum.

Balthier really couldn't understand what it was with Orichalcum. Really it was such a common metal back home. It made good armor and weapons, but Adamantite was so much better!

Z took notes on the lecture, but was kind of distracted by wondering what was up with Bridge and his early-morning phone call.

"After coming to a place like Fandom, I think it would be foolish of anyone to say that a place like Atlantis can't exist." Valentine shrugged a little. "But after the attack of the merpeople the other month, I don't know that I would want to go hunting for it."

"With everything I've seen, I would honestly be surprised if Atlantis didn't exist." Tori admitted. "I do think it's something worth looking for." It was definitely something worth believing in, as well.

"I think it probably did exist. And it may still be out there in some way or another. But I doubt it's anything like people now a days think it would be. They'd probably pass right over it if they found it. And looking for Atlantis is as fine a quest as anything, it's not so much what you're looking for that makes it worthy, but why."

Re: Discussion [FaF, Week 13]

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2007-04-12 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, I believe that it did exist, though it may now be more of an intellectual curiosity than anything else. I don't think it should be found though--there's a reason that it sank, and there may be repercussions if people start excavating and stealing artifacts and stuff." She shrugged.

"I'm quite certain it *could* exist," Evie said earnestly. "In fact, I was just reading a book about it, and the possibility that it exploded in a volcanic eruption. I don't know if it was a Platonic ideal, but who's to say it wasn't?" She bounced in her seat a little, and added, "And there's always Hamunaptra, too. These places *should* be looked for! If they're what we think they're like, we can learn so much! And if they're not, we can learn even more!"

[identity profile] strahl-pirate.livejournal.com 2007-04-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"It very well could exist still on this world I suppose. If a place like that had such advanced technology I wouldn't be in the least surprised if they had a way of hiding themselves." The pirate shrugged and went on. "If it is a persons dream to find such a place then they buy all means should go with it."
multiplez: (Are you for real?)

"I thought Atlantis was supposed to be that island, Santor-whatsit," Z said. "And it disappeared because a volcano, like, blew out the center of the island. I watched a show on it once. Anyway, it was a Cretan settlement, not anything special, although I guess aliens or something could have been involved."

Dawn was here.

And possibly glaring at the Hazard Level. Because she was completely human, yes.
