The display screens today were going through a series of images that some students might recognize as pictures related to the mythical continent of Atlantis.

"Atlantis," Sakura said once the students had filed in, passing around a handout. "The earliest known references to this continent date back to Plato’s accounts from 360 BC. Later accounts of it believe it to be the archetypal utopia – the perfect advanced society."

"Orichalcum, the legendary metal of Atlantis, is held to be extremely valuable, second only to gold. We have not actually obtained any yet, although we do believe that it’s likely to exist." Sakura went into a lengthy discussion of Plato’s description of Atlantis, and concluded, "Many adventurers have dreamed of finding the lost continent of Atlantis. No one has succeeded yet that I know of, but I do believe that it’s a worthy goal. And dreams are a crucial part of adventuring, should you choose to make that your career."

"So my question to you: do you believe Atlantis exists? Do you think searching for it is a worthy goal?" She glanced at Evie. “If not, what do you think is a worthwhile, motivating dream for an adventurer to have?"

"Sunken cities? You think there's more than one?"

"I saw a thing on the discovery channel about it once." he said. "Folks have come up with more than one site that it might have been in. Plus, there's an ancient road in South America somewhere that leads right into the sea."

She grinned, "You don't think that's just a joke by the South American road builders? Or a metaphor for something?"

Billy snickered. "That would be a good joke. Even, or no, especially if the builders knew it wouldn't work until thousands of years hence."

"It could have also been the road for sacrifices to march down before they just walked into the water, but hey, those builders could have been psychics or something."

"Or early mermaids."

"Have you heard the legends that Atlantis actually had mermaids living there?" She asked.

"I have. I actually have a theory about Mermaids. How they might actually could scientifically exist."

"Oh, yeah?" Dawn leaned over, interested, "What's that?"

"Well I found out recently, that Whales used to be land mammals, but after spending enough time in the ocean, they evolved into sea creatures. So, couldn't humans do the same thing?"

"I guess so? I'm not so good at biology."

"I'm not much better probably. I don't know how exactly it would work, but it seems possible."

"But isn't that backwards? I mean, the legends of mermaids have been around for hundreds of years, so they'd have to have evolved already."

"Well humans have been around for a long, long time too. Not nearly as long as whales of course, but maybe long enough to get some fishy characteristics."

Dawn was now totally checking her neck for gills. Hey, it could have happened while she was asleep.

"You okay?"

"Just checking for fish parts, but I think I'm clean."

"I think if you can still breathe when not in the water you're good yeah."

"Better to be safe than sorry," she said, leaning over to check out her feet.

"On this island, yeah."
