Ethics [Monday, March 19, 5th period]

Anakin, wearing his best "don't screw with me today" expression, came into the classroom a few minutes late and slammed the door shut behind him.

His eyes moved immediately towards the area of the classroom where John Crichton normally sat.

The desk was empty.

The look in Anakin's eyes hardened more. "Today we begin our discussion about the seven deadly sins," he said, cloak sweeping out behind him as he paced. "Specifically, wrath, envy and pride."

If Anakin looked like the poster child for wrath at the moment, it had entirely escaped his attention. So had the blood that had dried on his shoulder.

"Pride is traditionally considered the original and most serious of the sins--the one that everything else can be traced back to. Dante--a famous writer on this world--described it as 'love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbor.'"

"It's a very common human failing," Anakin continued. "Have you ever fallen for it--considered yourself to be so much smarter or better than your classmates? Or your teachers?" He shrugged. "Or are wrath or envy more your speed? Can you see how pride could lead to the other two vices we're discussing today?"

He waved a hand. "Pair up and talk about it."

Knowing if he paired up with anyone else, he would just spend the entire class watching Sammy anyway, Dean moved over and dropped into the desk beside his brother. "Hey," he said softly.

"Hey," Sam replied weakly, finally glancing at Dean.

It took Dean a moment to think of something else to say. "Dawn's crashing with me," he finally offered. "She's.. well really annoyed with you, but she's okay."

"Yeah, the radio mentioned she was with you." As much as he didn't like the thought of Dawn staying with anyone but him, Dean was probably one of the only guys he'd trust her with. "If she wants to come back to the room to get more things, I can make sure I'm not there. I doubt she wants to see me."

"I think that depends on how you're going to act," Dean said glancing at Sammy. He remembered what Dawn and him had discussed and added, "Christo."

Sam was tempted to give Dean a mild punch, but he looked so tired - which was probably his fault, but he certainly wasn't going to ask at the moment - that Sam just gave him a strange look instead. "Dude, you did not just Christo me."

Dean shrugged. "It would've explained a lot."

"Right, because I'm sure that I'd be trying to look out for you if I was possessed," Sam said, lightly sarcastic.

"Yeah, I'm feeling really looked out for here," Dean muttered.

Sam frowned. "You are, even if no one believes it yet."

"You're trying to destroy my best friend," Dean pointed out. "That's not exactly going to fill me with the milk of human kindness and gratitude."

It was one thing for Dawn to say that Alec was Dean's best friend. But hearing it from Dean made the knot in Sam's stomach get even bigger. "I wasn't trying to destroy him, but if that's what gets you away from him, then so be it."

"Yeah will that's not going to happen," Dean told him stubbornly. "At this point, if Alec leaves, I'm probably going to go with him."

"What?" Sam said, staring at Dean. "Dean, you can't leave."

"What I can't do is let Alec go off alone with them out there hunting for him."

"So what, you're just going to pack up and leave?" Sam asked. "You're just going to go and abandon me and Dad for Alec?"

"It's not my first choice," Dean admitted. "My first choice is to stay here with everyone but someone is doing his best to make that impossible."

"Well maybe someone assumed you'd choose your family over your so-called best friend," Sam replied.

"What -- you thought I'd just shrug and say 'my bad,' before I throw him to the wolves?" Dean shook his head. "Dude, sometimes I wonder if you really known me at all."

"You know, I'm beginning to wonder if I know you at all too," Sam shot back. "The Dean I know wouldn't let his emotions prevent him from seeing the truth."

"From where I'm sitting, I'm not the one denying the truth," Dean shot back. "You hate Alec so much you can't acknowledge that he was the victim, not the perpetrator."

"Just because he was trained to kill, it doesn't make him a victim," Sam replied, deliberately not commenting on exactly how much he hated Alec. "We've been trained too, and you don't see me saying that we're victims of anything."

"Yeah, but Dad never threatened to kill us for parts if we didn't do as well as he wanted," Dean said. "You're the one who found those records, you don't get to ignore all the stuff in them that doesn't fit your theory that Alec is evil."

Sam glared at Dean. "Oh, but you get to ignore all the stuff that does fit my theory, don't you? He is evil, Dean! And whether he was born that way or made that way, it doesn't change the fact that it's true!"

"He's not evil. He's... just like everyone else, a mixtre of good and bad. He's human, and you are just going to have to accept he's not a monster." Dean snorted. "I'm surprised you haven't tried to Hunt him if you're so convinced he's a monster."
