Ethics [Monday, March 19, 5th period]

Anakin, wearing his best "don't screw with me today" expression, came into the classroom a few minutes late and slammed the door shut behind him.

His eyes moved immediately towards the area of the classroom where John Crichton normally sat.

The desk was empty.

The look in Anakin's eyes hardened more. "Today we begin our discussion about the seven deadly sins," he said, cloak sweeping out behind him as he paced. "Specifically, wrath, envy and pride."

If Anakin looked like the poster child for wrath at the moment, it had entirely escaped his attention. So had the blood that had dried on his shoulder.

"Pride is traditionally considered the original and most serious of the sins--the one that everything else can be traced back to. Dante--a famous writer on this world--described it as 'love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbor.'"

"It's a very common human failing," Anakin continued. "Have you ever fallen for it--considered yourself to be so much smarter or better than your classmates? Or your teachers?" He shrugged. "Or are wrath or envy more your speed? Can you see how pride could lead to the other two vices we're discussing today?"

He waved a hand. "Pair up and talk about it."

"So what, you're just going to pack up and leave?" Sam asked. "You're just going to go and abandon me and Dad for Alec?"

"It's not my first choice," Dean admitted. "My first choice is to stay here with everyone but someone is doing his best to make that impossible."

"Well maybe someone assumed you'd choose your family over your so-called best friend," Sam replied.

"What -- you thought I'd just shrug and say 'my bad,' before I throw him to the wolves?" Dean shook his head. "Dude, sometimes I wonder if you really known me at all."

"You know, I'm beginning to wonder if I know you at all too," Sam shot back. "The Dean I know wouldn't let his emotions prevent him from seeing the truth."

"From where I'm sitting, I'm not the one denying the truth," Dean shot back. "You hate Alec so much you can't acknowledge that he was the victim, not the perpetrator."

"Just because he was trained to kill, it doesn't make him a victim," Sam replied, deliberately not commenting on exactly how much he hated Alec. "We've been trained too, and you don't see me saying that we're victims of anything."

"Yeah, but Dad never threatened to kill us for parts if we didn't do as well as he wanted," Dean said. "You're the one who found those records, you don't get to ignore all the stuff in them that doesn't fit your theory that Alec is evil."

Sam glared at Dean. "Oh, but you get to ignore all the stuff that does fit my theory, don't you? He is evil, Dean! And whether he was born that way or made that way, it doesn't change the fact that it's true!"

"He's not evil. He's... just like everyone else, a mixtre of good and bad. He's human, and you are just going to have to accept he's not a monster." Dean snorted. "I'm surprised you haven't tried to Hunt him if you're so convinced he's a monster."

"I haven't tried to hunt him because unlike Alec, I don't kill humans, no matter how evil they are."

"No, you just set him up to be hunted by others," Dean shot back. "Not to mention Manticore."

"I don't know why everyone's so concerned about Manticore finding him. He's been hiding from them for a while already, and it's not like they'll be able to find him here," Sam said.

"It's not like anyone's been hacking through their records from here before either," Dean said pointedly.

"I know how to cover my tracks, Dean," Sam said, sounding slightly insulted. "They're not going to find him here."

"Still, you're taking an awfully big chance with somebody's life," Dean said. "Or maybe you'd be happy if Manticore did come and torture Alec to death. Bet you'd love that."

"I don't want them to torture him to death," Sam said before dropping his voice. "Just making him go away would be enough."

"Yeah, well I don't want him to go away." The words almost came out as a challenge.

"Well, you might not have a choice if Zoe decides he has to leave. But then, you'll just go with him, won't you?"

"Zoe's not going to kick him out," Dean said firmly. "She, unlike some people in the family, deals with reality and not their own petty vendettas."

"I am not being petty," Sam replied sharply. "If I was being petty, I would have dragged people from Manticore here myself."

Dean looked at him in disbelief. "You've totally lost it."

"I have not. And I'm getting really tired of having to say that, and of trying to defend myself against people," Sam said, sighing.

"Y'know the amount you're having to defend yourself might just be a sign that you've totally lost it," Dean repeated. "I mean, dude, what you've done is... It's like I decided to out Dawn to the whole school as a big ball of energy that almost destroyed the universe and could do so again so everyone avoid her."

Sam gave Dean an incredulous look. "That's totally different! Dawn isn't dangerous, and you know it. She'd never hurt anyone willingly."
