Novice's Guide to Villains & Villainy - Week 2, Friday, Period 3 (Danger Shop)

"Good morning. Your satchels are under your chairs if you haven't found them yet. They are yours to do with as you wish. Try not to lose them. First things first - now that you have your tools, I hope that by the end of the semester you won't need them. Having objects at your disposal is handy, but more often than not, you won't conveniently have what you need within reach. You'll all have to learn how to adapt to your situation, use what have you have around you and rely on your wits and strengths. Your best chance at taking on a villain, in a hypothetical situation of course, is to make the most of yourself. Not everyone can have powers, but we all have the opportunity to learn skills. Learn as much as you can and you'll be well prepared.

But there are three pieces of advice that I hope you'll always heed - invest in a pair of comfortable shoes, always wear clean underwear and keep your eyes open for allies and friends. They appear in the most unlikely of places.

Now I won't be lecturing much in this class. I'd simply be repeating your handbook. It's there for supplementary reading and to have on hand if you want to know anything. I am also available for any questions and any extra help you might want to seek out outside of class. If I'm not available, your TAs Z Delgado and Seely Booth will hopefully be of some help.

Next week we'll start to get our hands dirty in some practical situations. This week we'll keep to the basics. What I want you to discuss today is what makes a villain? How can you distinguish between a regular criminal and a villain? What makes the difference between a villain and a supervillain?. Answer one, or all. Discuss with each other. Argue, if you'd like. No fisticuffs, please. Your handbook has one answer and you can rote learn it, if you'd like, but a big part of dealing with villains involves using your own judgment. Start using it."

Bel stared at the contents of his kit and suddenly felt a lot safer in Fandom.
multiplez: (Z is a sad panda.)

Z checked out her shiny new stuff. And looked like just-kidnapped hell.

Cally poked through the kit and made a mental note to swap out the knife for the one MacGyver had given her last year.

Tori looked throught her kit, surveying the contents and smiled to herself. These were good things to have.

Alanna was having a stare down with her Rubik's Cube. "What is it?"

Kaylee sat down and examined her kit. The disposable cellphone was intriguing.

Hermione is absolutely giddy over the new book. There may have even been a little bounce.

Pippi is a little out of it, she's got a nice shiner on her left eye, she's trying to pay attention though.

Layla looked over the kit, her glee increasing with each thing she pulled out.

Hamlet looked over the contents of the kit and grinned a little. Oh yes, these would be helpful.

Luna examined the contents of her kit carefully and thoroughly.

The two items which she was unfamiliar with sat out on her desk as she gave them a closer look and, perhaps, tapped at them with her wand.

Hopefully the cellphone and Rubik's Cube would survive.

Luke was absolutely confused by the Cube of Many Colors.

So he stared at it.

Because that would help.

"Blood sucking fiend who kills a family member, Demon from another dimension who kills your friends," Mel said counting off on her fingers. "I'm not sure what ranks them as a super or regular villain."
multiplez: (You're ticking me off.)

"Well, if they're an evil alien who kidnaps me and steals my powers, that's bad, right? And generally, your supervillains have minions. And powers. And come from outer space, in my experience."

"Villians are content to stay local? Supervillians want to take over the world?" Isabel asked. It is possible she was forced to watch Alex Powell one to many times by Michael and Kyle.

"Villains have a distorted sense of morals," River said, thinking aloud. "Supervillains. More minions and/or hybris."

Re: Discussion

[personal profile] smartestone 2007-01-19 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think a villain is anyone who commits acts of crime and violence with premeditation, and usually has a plan for doing it. For instance, someone who plots to take over something would be a villain while a minion who robs or kills someone would be a criminal," Hermione says. "And I think the difference between a villain and a supervillain would depend on the scale of the plot and the duration of how long they're allowed to operate."

"Hard question to answer - I'd say it's all conjecture," Krycek said, shrugging. "Except that, maybe, a criminal is just defined as someone who's broken the law."

Re: Discussion

[identity profile] proudsidekick.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Regular criminals don't have any kind of special powers. They're your regular, run of the mill sort of thieves and robbers and all. And I don't mean that they're any less dangerous, of course," she added quickly. "They're just easier to take down."

"And I think the difference between villains and supervillains is in their plans. Villains use their powers to do basic criminal stuff - rob banks, kidnap people, stuff like that. It's the supervillains that want to take over the world. And like other people said, minions are important too."
