Novice's Guide to Villains & Villainy - Week 2, Friday, Period 3 (Danger Shop)

"Good morning. Your satchels are under your chairs if you haven't found them yet. They are yours to do with as you wish. Try not to lose them. First things first - now that you have your tools, I hope that by the end of the semester you won't need them. Having objects at your disposal is handy, but more often than not, you won't conveniently have what you need within reach. You'll all have to learn how to adapt to your situation, use what have you have around you and rely on your wits and strengths. Your best chance at taking on a villain, in a hypothetical situation of course, is to make the most of yourself. Not everyone can have powers, but we all have the opportunity to learn skills. Learn as much as you can and you'll be well prepared.

But there are three pieces of advice that I hope you'll always heed - invest in a pair of comfortable shoes, always wear clean underwear and keep your eyes open for allies and friends. They appear in the most unlikely of places.

Now I won't be lecturing much in this class. I'd simply be repeating your handbook. It's there for supplementary reading and to have on hand if you want to know anything. I am also available for any questions and any extra help you might want to seek out outside of class. If I'm not available, your TAs Z Delgado and Seely Booth will hopefully be of some help.

Next week we'll start to get our hands dirty in some practical situations. This week we'll keep to the basics. What I want you to discuss today is what makes a villain? How can you distinguish between a regular criminal and a villain? What makes the difference between a villain and a supervillain?. Answer one, or all. Discuss with each other. Argue, if you'd like. No fisticuffs, please. Your handbook has one answer and you can rote learn it, if you'd like, but a big part of dealing with villains involves using your own judgment. Start using it."

"Trying to figure out how a Rubik's Cube and hairspray are going to defeat evil," Bel said, still peering at his kit. "You?"

"Hairspray plus match equals instant flame thrower," Isabel explained holding up the two items. "Not quite as nifty as a fireball but just as effective. It was my weapon of choice when the mummies where in town. But yeah, I'm stumped about the Rubik's Cube as well."

"Ah, good point," Bel said. He put on a pouty face. "I miss my fireballs," he said wistfully. "And being able to shimmer."

"I miss you being able to shimmer. Portalcity is expensive!" she said, shaking her head.

"Sorry, I had to close the doors on the Cosmic Taxi Service," Bel said with a chuckle.

"We'll all survive somehow," Isabel replied. "So what else have you been up to? How's Phoebe? Getting better?"

"She's feeling much better," Bel said. "I still haven't met the two who are claiming to be her nephews, however. I want to keep an eye on them. I'm not sure they're who they claim to be."

"They're in my Hunting class but I haven't actually talked to the yet." Isabel shrugged, "One of them is Parker's little sib and she's talked with him a lot. She doesn't think there's any reason to be suspicious."

Bel shrugged. "I'm just a little protective when it comes to Pheobe," he said. "I'll have to see for myself if their story is true."

"You're perogative, rightly so." Isabel quirked an eyebrow studying Bel, wondering if there was any tactful way to say are you screwing around on your girlfriend, dumbass? "You love her. You wouldn't want anything to happen to her."

"Of course not," Bel said. "I may not be a demon anymore, but if anybody lays a hand on Phoebe, they won't like how I deal with it."

"I'm sure you'll be extremely creative." She put down the pair of socks, and gazed at Bel. "Look, we're friends right? And that means we can ask each other personal questions without pissing each other off too badly?"

Bel gave Isabel a curious look. "What's on your mind?" he said.

Isabel sighed, "I just hard something that made me think you might be doing something you might regret in the long run."

Bel frowned. "What have you heard?" he asked. "If it was on the radio, you know how ridiculous half the things they say on there are."

[*smites it!*]

"No squirrels, I swear," she promised. "I just heard something. Let's leave it at that." Isabel stepped a little closer, lowering her voice. "It made me think you might be doing something stupid like screwing around on Phoebe."

[I assume the conversation topic is NFB?]

Bel blinked. "Who the hell told you that?" he said. "Of course I'm not! Why would I do that?"

[Yis, and I collect class links, so we're good. :) ]

Isabel held up her hands. "It doesn't matter who told me. But I figured that as your friend I should ask you. And possibly thwap you if you needed it. You've got a good thing going with her. I don't want to see it get messed up."

"Phoebe and I are fine," Bel insisted. "Never better. So who am I supposed to be cheating on her with?"

"Honestly I don't know. It's just the way something was phrased to me, and it made me wonder." Isabel wasn't quite certain she believed him. But without anything more concrete, she supposed she'd have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Bel made a mental note to have a little chat with Anders about this. "I assure you, I'm not cheating on Phoebe," he said. "I love her." He paused, then asked, "You're not going to say anything to her about this, are you?"

"Good. Because I wouldn't want to have to kick your ass," she teased. "And I won't say a thing. Promise."

"Good," Bel said. It would be a shame to have to kill you. "I'd hate to get her upset over nothing."

Isabel mimed zipping her lips. "Nope, that would be bad." Hefting the Rubik's Cube in her hand, she idly tossed it in the air. "Do you think maybe it's a weapon? I suppose if you got hit with it, it would hurt."

"Maybe it's good for obsessive compulsive villains," Bel said. "If they see a puzzle they have to stop and solve it. Like how some species of vampires are compelled to stop and count poppy seeds or sunflower seeds."
