"Good morning. Your satchels are under your chairs if you haven't found them yet. They are yours to do with as you wish. Try not to lose them. First things first - now that you have your tools, I hope that by the end of the semester you won't need them. Having objects at your disposal is handy, but more often than not, you won't conveniently have what you need within reach. You'll all have to learn how to adapt to your situation, use what have you have around you and rely on your wits and strengths. Your best chance at taking on a villain, in a hypothetical situation of course, is to make the most of yourself. Not everyone can have powers, but we all have the opportunity to learn skills. Learn as much as you can and you'll be well prepared.

But there are three pieces of advice that I hope you'll always heed - invest in a pair of comfortable shoes, always wear clean underwear and keep your eyes open for allies and friends. They appear in the most unlikely of places.

Now I won't be lecturing much in this class. I'd simply be repeating your handbook. It's there for supplementary reading and to have on hand if you want to know anything. I am also available for any questions and any extra help you might want to seek out outside of class. If I'm not available, your TAs Z Delgado and Seely Booth will hopefully be of some help.

Next week we'll start to get our hands dirty in some practical situations. This week we'll keep to the basics. What I want you to discuss today is what makes a villain? How can you distinguish between a regular criminal and a villain? What makes the difference between a villain and a supervillain?. Answer one, or all. Discuss with each other. Argue, if you'd like. No fisticuffs, please. Your handbook has one answer and you can rote learn it, if you'd like, but a big part of dealing with villains involves using your own judgment. Start using it."

"If I have to," Seely replied, serious behind his grin. "Couple of reason, they can make a waterproof cover for your matches, provide something of a makeshift container for certain items of evidence."

"And in a pinch, you'll be all set if" -- Bel glanced at the syllabus -- "Long John Silver is feeling particularly amorous."

"Well, name like that he's either compensating, and I've go nothing to worry about," Seely said. "Or I'm in for quite a ride."

"I think he's a pirate," Bel mused. "Maybe from that porn I hear was playing in the common room the other night?"

And right about now the Source was quite possibly cursing the imagery that was coming to mind. Stupid demon and his stupid crush on the stupid vampire. And stupid vampire lookalikes.

"Well, there were definitely a couple of Long John Silvers, if you get my drift," Seely grinned. "Of course, even better than the John Silvers were the Jane Silvers."

"I'm sorry I missed it," Bel said. "I've been busy lately."

"Pity, it was quite a show," Seely said. "I mean, you wouldn't believe the things they were doing with cutlasses."

"Piracy runs in my family, you know," Bel said idly, trying to drive a new meaning of "heave to and prepare to be boarded" out of his head. "Turner used to be a very respected name among pirates. Maybe not that kind of pirate, though."

"You never know," Seely replied. "After all, I was under the impression that pillaging and booty plundering were honoured piratical past times."

"Maybe I can fall back on that as a career now that I'm not a demon anymore," Bel mused. He meant piracy, of course, not porn.

"Well, if you think you've got what it takes, more power to you," Seely said. He totally meant porn.

"Don't you think so?" Bel said. "I've got the build and stamina for that kind of life."

"Hey, I believe you," Seely replied. "And if you aren't nervous about that kind of thing, good on you."

"Of course not," Bel said. "I know how to handle my sword, after all."

"So you've never had any problems with sticking it in the right guy?"

"I know right where to put it," Bel said with a smirk.

"I just bet you do," Seely smirked back.

"I could show you sometime," Bel said.

"Really?" Seely asked. "I'm flattered you'd consider doing that for me."

"Why not?" Bel said. "You look like you'd be able to give me a good workout."

"Well, I haven't had any complaints." Except for Callisto that one time, but he wasn't going to mention that. "I just didn't think I was your usual choice as these things go."

"I'm equal opportunity as long as it's a good time," Bel said with a shrug.

Seely grinned. "A wise philosophy," he said. "And one I completely agree with."

"So when do you want to give it a go?" Bel said with his own grin.

"Whenever you're up for it," Seely replied.
