John wandered in during fourth period, sidled up to the counter and stared intently at Rory.

Rory looked up from her pretty, pretty highlighters. "Yeeeeeeeeees?"

"I need some advice, s'il vous plait," he said, proud of the wee tiny bit of French he knew.

"Oui? Comment est-ce que je peux aider?" Rory asked, proud of the bit of French she knew.

"I have no idea what you just said."

"I asked what you need," Rory said. "What kind of advice, oh em gee?"

"Secret advice, okay?" He nodded. "You're gonna be the third and last person to know this."

"Secret. Got it," she said, actually setting down her highlighter.

Rory blinked and looked from the page back up at John. "These are engagement rings," she said slowly.

"Yeah," he said with a small nod. "Yeah, they are."

Rory smiled slowly and then looked back down at the pages. "Well, I think she's more of a square-cut girl, to start with."

He nodded and looked back down too. "I went with something semi simple since something too big would get caught on things."

"I think this one's perfect," Rory said, nodding and pointing to the second ring. "But most of them look pretty much perfect. Are you serious about this?"

"Yes," he said, nodding. "I'm asking on graduation day. I've already told Angel to keep a date open because he's the best man."

Rory smiled. "When? I mean, when she says yes, when do you think you guys'll do it? I want to make sure to keep my calender clear."

"Probably not during the summer because of the heat thing," he said. "Winter, maybe? She loves the snow."

Rory grinned and bounced a little in her seat. "This is so exciting."

Normally she'd be questioning whether or not this was a good idea. But sometimes, things were so clearly right that even Rory didn't want to second-guess it.

"I still have to ask and she still has to say yes," John said and he was only a little bit nervous about that part.

"She will," Rory said confidently. "She already wears the other ring."

"Yeah," he said, nodding. "Yeah, that's right. This is top secret, no tell-y Aeryn."

"Of course," she said with a nod. "I won't say a word. Has she noticed anything up with you at all, or are you doing okay with the secrecy?"

"I'm doing okay," he said. "She almost caught me looking at rings stuff on her computer but I think she thinks I was looking at porn."

"...which, sadly, is better," Rory said, facepalming.
