Ethics [Monday, January 15, 5th period]

Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest." He glanced down at the student roster. "If everyone comes to class today, there will be an odd number. That final person will be interrogated by me."

He crossed his arms over his chest, his mechanical breathing the only sound for a moment. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

"Well, clowns are certainly up there, but I guess my biggest fear is anyone in our family dying," Sam admitted.

"Yeah, mine too," Dean said softly, meeting his brother's eyes. He shook off the moment and said, "Your turn."

Wanting to get away from such a serious subject, Sam decided to switch gears. "Okay, so out of all of the people at this school, all of whom you could easily get if you wanted to, what on earth made you pick Alec?"

Dean had to grin at Sammy's confidence in him. He tried to answer the question though he wasn't sure he could completely put into words something that had just seemed to have happened so naturally.

"I like Alec," Dean said, starting with the most obvious. "Liked him pretty much from when we first met him. Even if we weren't...y'know, we'd still be best friends I'm pretty sure."

"You seriously have no taste in friends," Sam replied. "I don't know how you can like him, with the way he acts."

"Yeah, he acts like a brat sometimes," Dean admitted, "especially around you. But there's more to him than that."

"Maybe. But you're the only one who ever gets to see that side. It wouldn't kill him to be a little nicer. Especially to me," Sam added.

"That works both ways, y'know," Dean pointed out gently. "You're not exactly on your best behaviour around Alec either. Frankly, the way the two of you snipe at each other all the time drives me crazy."

Since they were being truthful, Sam figured now would be a good time to ask. "Does it really bother you that much?"

"Yeah, kinda," Dean said. "Being stuck in the middle's not a fun place to be. And then I feel like I can't talk to Alec about you, or you about Alec without the both of you getting pissy and dude, you're both important to me and part of my life and I hate having to censor myself."

Sam squirmed a little in his seat, looking uncomfortable. "You don't have to censor yourself with me. I can try to be less pissy when you talk about him, if that'll help."

Dean nodded slowly. "It would. It would help more if the two of you could actually get along, but I guess I can't ask for miracles, huh?"

"I don't know," Sam replied. "I don't think Alec wants to get along with me."

"Do you want to get along with him?" Dean asked bluntly.

Sam had to think about that for a few moments. "I don't want you to be annoyed with us. And I'm tired of always rushing to defend myself around him. It would be better and easier if we got along, I guess."

"Would be for me, at least," Dean said with a wry smile.

"I don't want to make things hard for you. At least, not in this respect," Sam said with a grin. "I have plenty of other ways to annoy you on my own."

"You're not so bad," Dean said, grinning back. "Most of the time."

"Gee, thanks." Sam laughed. "I'll try to be more peaceful with Alec, I promise."

"Thanks, Sammy," Dean said, heartfelt. "I'd appreciate it."

Sam grinned, because really, that sentiment was more than enough for him to at least make the effort of peace with Alec. "Is it my turn for a question, or yours?"

Dean frowned. "Mine, I think." He thought for a moment then asked, "What's the one thing about me, you'd want to change if you could?"

"You're seriously asking me that?" Sam squirmed again, caught between telling Dean he was fine, and getting detention. "I'd make you less protective of me," he finally said.

"Really?" Dean asked with a deepening frown.

"Not all the time," he added quickly. "Just when you get crazy about it, to the point where I have to worry that you're going to do something stupid to try to keep me safe."
