Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest." He glanced down at the student roster. "If everyone comes to class today, there will be an odd number. That final person will be interrogated by me."

He crossed his arms over his chest, his mechanical breathing the only sound for a moment. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

Dean was quiet for a long time before answering, regarding Sammy consideringly. "I'd... give you a shot at that normal life you're always going on and on about," he finally said.

That definitely wasn't the answer Sam was expecting, and he felt a little guilty for his own answer. "Really?"

"Really. I mean, changing anything else about you would make you a little less Sammy and I don't want to do that."

"I guess making you less protective would make you a lot less Dean, huh?" Sam replied. "I thought that you thought my whole 'normal life' was a waste?"

Dean shrugged. "You've never really had a shot at normal, so I get how it can seem so attractive to you." He smiled slightly. "Who knows, if you ever do get a taste at it, you might end up deciding you like the Winchester way of life better."

"I don't know about that," Sam replied. "And you didn't get much of a shot at normal either, you know. I don't understand why it doesn't seem attractive to you too."

"Trying to live a so-called 'normal life' would seem like a lie to me," Dean said with another shrug. "I know what's out there, I'm not going to pretend I don't, or sit back and ignore it when I see things happening. I'd have to do both to be 'normal'."

"In a way, we're doing both now," Sam said. "I mean, we've almost totally settled down here, but we're still hunting when something comes up. What's wrong with that?"

"Nothing," Dean said with a grin. "But this still isn't normal. It's just that everything's weird here so you don't notice we're not normal."

"Okay, so this isn't the most normal place," Sam admitted. "But there's no reason that we couldn't find a way to make the same thing work once we finish school. We could have regular jobs, and find a way to make time for the hunting when we had to."

Dean looked at him appraisingly. "That's the first time I've heard you suggest something other than a completely normal white picket fence life," he observed.

Sam smiled softly. "As much as you wish I could have that life, even if it's only long enough to realize the error of my ways, I'm never going to get it as long as Dad has the final say. I'm attempting to be reasonable about that, for the time being at least."

"Dad's trying," Dean pointed out. "We're here, he's here, and we're not going anywhere."

"But you said it yourself - this place isn't remotely normal."

"Neither are we. Here at least we can be ourselves, we don't have to hide. Anywhere so-called normal we'd have to pretend we're something that we're not."

"Maybe you would," Sam replied. "But if I was somewhere normal, then I could be normal. There wouldn't be any pretending."

"Yeah, except for having to hide your entire past."

Sam just shrugged at that. "Lots of people don't talk about how they grew up."

"Or family? Because you wouldn't be able to talk much about Dad or me without y'know talking about things that aren't normal."

"I can talk about you without mentioning anything weird. You're my older brother who likes cars, really bad music, and has very strange taste when it comes to dating," Sam replied, teasing lightly.

"Hey, I dated Dawn too," Dean pointed out.

Sam laughed. "Okay, occasionally strange taste in dating."

"So what would you say about Dad in your normal life?" Dean asked.

Sam just barely remembered that he was supposed to tell the truth in time. "I don't know. There are some things I could say - that he was in the military, and that he used to work in a garage..."

"Kinda leaving out some pretty big parts about him," Dean pointed out.
