Ethics [Monday, January 15, 5th period]

Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest." He glanced down at the student roster. "If everyone comes to class today, there will be an odd number. That final person will be interrogated by me."

He crossed his arms over his chest, his mechanical breathing the only sound for a moment. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

"You're seriously asking me that?" Sam squirmed again, caught between telling Dean he was fine, and getting detention. "I'd make you less protective of me," he finally said.

"Really?" Dean asked with a deepening frown.

"Not all the time," he added quickly. "Just when you get crazy about it, to the point where I have to worry that you're going to do something stupid to try to keep me safe."

"It's my job," Dean said, as if it was self-evident.

"See, that's the attitude I'm talking about. I'm not your job, Dean, and I'm not your responsibility, or anything else like that. It's too much responsibility for both of us."

"See, that's where you're wrong," Dean said. "You are my responsibility. Dad told me that when he and Mom first brought you home from the hospital. That you're my little brother and it was my job to look after you. And it's not too much responsibility -- I've been doing it all your life."

"No you haven't," Sam replied simply. "Not for the three years you were gone. I looked after myself, and I think I did a pretty damn good job of it."

"So what -- you saying you've outgrown me?" Dean asked.

"I'm saying that I'm not a little kid anymore, Dean." Sam frowned softly. "And I'm saying that I don't want to be your job, because people get tired of jobs when they do them for too long."

Dean stared. "Sammy, I'm not ever going to get tired of being your big brother, or of looking out for you."

"You don't know that," Sam said quietly. "If you keep taking this as seriously as you do, it'll only be a matter of time before it gets to be too much, and you won't want to bother anymore. I want you to look out for me the way I look out for you - because you're my brother, and I care about you, and I don't want you to get hurt, not because Dad or anyone else said I have to."

Dean was staring some more. "Dude, you don't get it, do you? I don't look out or feel responsible for you just because Dad told me to. I do it because you're my brother. I do it because you're one of the two most important people in my life. It's not something that I'm ever going to think is too much of a bother. Hell, if I made it through you toilet training, I think I've proven I've got stamina."

Sam laughed softly. "You definitely have stamina. And it's not that I don't appreciate you looking out for me when I need it, because you having my back in a crisis is one of the few constants in my life. I just think maybe you could save some energy if you didn't try so hard to look out for me when I don't need it."

"Trust me, I'd waste more energy worrying about you if I didn't check and make sure you're doing okay."

"So, basically, there's nothing I can do to make you stop worrying about me?"

Dean actually considered before answering. "Not that I can think of."

Sam just rolled his eyes and shook his head. "You are so stubborn sometimes."

"Do I need to introduce you the concept of pot and kettle," Dean asked with a smirk. "Because if anyone's getting pegged with being stubborn..."

"I guess you have a point," Sam admitted. "So, same question back at you. If you could change one thing about me, what would it be?"

Dean was quiet for a long time before answering, regarding Sammy consideringly. "I'd... give you a shot at that normal life you're always going on and on about," he finally said.

That definitely wasn't the answer Sam was expecting, and he felt a little guilty for his own answer. "Really?"

"Really. I mean, changing anything else about you would make you a little less Sammy and I don't want to do that."

"I guess making you less protective would make you a lot less Dean, huh?" Sam replied. "I thought that you thought my whole 'normal life' was a waste?"

Dean shrugged. "You've never really had a shot at normal, so I get how it can seem so attractive to you." He smiled slightly. "Who knows, if you ever do get a taste at it, you might end up deciding you like the Winchester way of life better."

"I don't know about that," Sam replied. "And you didn't get much of a shot at normal either, you know. I don't understand why it doesn't seem attractive to you too."
