Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class One [Period 5, Thursday]

The students were greeted with an empty classroom as they filed in.

Once everyone was seated, Ares appeared in a flash of blue light. "Greetings," he said. "I am Ares, God of War, and before you all start with the questions and flailing and prostrating yourself before me in worship, yes I am the Ares, and I am a real god. I'll be happy to give a demonstration to anyone who doesn't believe me." His tone suggested that while he might be happy to give a demonstrate, the person he gave it to wouldn't be.

"Now, to class. I'm assuming you all signed up because you want to learn more about the gods," Ares said, leaning against his desk. "Believe me you will. Forget the drunken ramblings of half-mad priests and madder politician, from me you'll be hearing firsthand accounts of the gods, in all their glorious and less than glorious moments. As you can see from the syllabus, we will be focusing on the Greek pantheon, otherwise known as the Olympians. Because, hey, you can't escape family."

"Because this is the first class, and I realise you may all be somewhat awed by being taught by me, a real live god, I'm going to go easy on you all, trust me, it won't happen again. Today you're just going to introduce yourself, tell the class which gods and goddesses you worship and why."

He waved a dismissive hand at the class. "Well, what are you waiting for, go on."

Ares doesn't worship anyone, being a god and all, who do you worship?

"I am Steerpike." He bowed slightly. "I am from the Earldom of Gormenghast, which, we are taught, is supposed to be all there is to the world. Apparently, this was incorrect. We were to look upon our Earl as our godly figure. He pales in the face of a real god, of course, and it's an honor to be in your class, sir."

Ares grinned, there was something about the shameless flattery that reminded him of Strife. He just hoped that this mortal was slightly more competent. "I hope to rectify the gaps in your learning."

Walter eyed Ares and stood when it was his turn.

Really, a god of war? He could get behind that.

But...

"My name is Walter Dornez. I am not related to Steerpike. I am from London about sixty years ago." He nodded to Ares. "There's a war on there.

"I work for a Protestant organization and I am Anglican. We worship one God. Not gods."

"My name is Alanna Trebond and I have a god in my bag I'm from Tortall. My patron goddess is the Great Mother Goddess and I'm very happy to hear that you have a much quiter voice than her." Well, Aly has to get some of her attitude from somewhere.

Anders might have boggled more, but he'd taken two semesters of classics with Dream and was prepared for the fact that the Lords of Kobol and the Greek gods seemed to be one and the same.

Not that it prepared him for actually having one for a teacher.

Maybe third time's the charm?

"Name's Anders. I'm not really religious myself, but back in the Colonies we worship the Lords of Kobol. Who, um . . . there's Zeus, and Hera, and Aphrodite, and Artemis, and Athena, and Apollo --" He couldn't help curling his lip a little at the mention of that one, but he didn't know why. "And, uh, you."

"I'm Valentine from nowhere in particular, which just happens to be rather far from here. So far as gods go, I don't think they really have one where I'm from. Just some 'She' who did something with a charm while sitting on a manky carpet, or something of the sort. Nobody really understands what the story means, and I never really paid much attention anyhow. It all sounds like complete rubbish to me."

"Jack Harkness," and he was thinking delusions of grandeur so strongly it might just have shown on his face. "I don't worship anyone or anything. The place I come from, public religion was outlawed." He shrugged. "It was okay in the privacy of your own home, but I never met anyone who practiced it."

Evie stared. A lot. And blushed. "I'm Evelyn-- Evie!-- Carnahan. I, um." She frowned, already anxious. "Well, you see, my parents are two different religions, so we didn't really worship all that actively, but I was raised in the traditions of both, so Allah is God, and God is Allah, but, well, we studied the Egyptian gods so extensively that sometimes they sounded almost real, and," huge breath, "there were rather a lot of sects in Cairo, and I always rather liked the traditions of different ones, and, well, it's not as if I think any of them are right or wrong or likely to be proven so, because I'm a scientist and the whole premise for most religions is Faith, and I'm afraid that's a bit much to ask of someone who understands history and our place in it--" one last breath "-- so I'd have to say I believe in a Divine Presence but it doesn't seem to need me to worship it so I don't." She gulped.

"Were you in my Ancient Myths Final?"

"I'm Liz Sherman, I'm most recently from New Jersey and it's the year 1990 where I'm from," she paused, "and I'm Catholic, we only worship one god," it felt strange saying that she actually had a faith given everything that had happened to her recently.

"I'm Rikku, and I'm an Al Bhed, and we spent a thousand years being attacked by those self-righteous Yevonites because we didn't believe in their horrible, stupid, awful religion, and the whole time we were right."

She sat back down in a huff.

Per Parker's advice, Isabel had taken a seat in the back of the room and kept her face carefully blank. "I'm Isabel Evans," she said when it was her turn to speak. "And I've been raised Catholic although I think the best description for me these days would be lapsed."

Annette stared. Then she remembered to close her mouth.

How much could she trust a god of war?

"I'm Annette Hargrove from Kansas City, Kansas." She paused. "Present time."

The flash of blue light was really pretty cool though.

She smiled. "I really like Zeus, cause I loved the Disney cartoon Hercules. It was one of my favorite. So, learning about gods and goddesses will be great." She tilted her head and gave him a look. "Though I don't worship any." She snorted.

Cameron was possibly a bit too tired to fully register that this was a real god and not one of those wannabes he'd heard about. "I'm Cameron Mitchell. I'm Catholic, but my grandma would probably think I'm not Catholic enough."

A class being taught by an actual Greek god? Cool! This was Fandom though. Things like that happened. Molly wasn't too overawed.

"I'm Molly Hayes and I don't worship anybody, really. My parents were kind of servants to the Gibborim and weren't really all that big on going to church."

Janet rolled her eyes. "My name is Janet Fraiser, and I don't worship any gods. In fact, I don't believe that gods exist. I didn't actually sign up for this course, and I don't really need it to graduate, so if awe is a course requirement, maybe you should sign my form so I can get out of here and leave you in peace." Yes, she meant to make that pun.

OOC: Please do not be signing the drop form. Giving Janet a hard time would be ever-so-much appreciated.

It wasn't until Evie's introduction that he realized where he'd seen this guy before. He was still boggling at the acronym the sideburns being taught by an actual God.

"My name is William Kessler." he said. "I'm from a lot of places, about, 9 years ago. And up until recently, I didn't even believe in God. Or Gods." But I wouldn't be surprised if my father worshiped you.
