The students were greeted with an empty classroom as they filed in.

Once everyone was seated, Ares appeared in a flash of blue light. "Greetings," he said. "I am Ares, God of War, and before you all start with the questions and flailing and prostrating yourself before me in worship, yes I am the Ares, and I am a real god. I'll be happy to give a demonstration to anyone who doesn't believe me." His tone suggested that while he might be happy to give a demonstrate, the person he gave it to wouldn't be.

"Now, to class. I'm assuming you all signed up because you want to learn more about the gods," Ares said, leaning against his desk. "Believe me you will. Forget the drunken ramblings of half-mad priests and madder politician, from me you'll be hearing firsthand accounts of the gods, in all their glorious ~~and less than glorious~~ moments. As you can see from the syllabus, we will be focusing on the Greek pantheon, otherwise known as the Olympians. Because, hey, you can't escape family."

"Because this is the first class, and I realise you may all be somewhat awed by being taught by me, a real live god, I'm going to go easy on you all, trust me, it won't happen again. Today you're just going to introduce yourself, tell the class which gods and goddesses you worship and why."

He waved a dismissive hand at the class. "Well, what are you waiting for, go on."

"Wait, why is that?" asked Janet. "Because I don't like you on principle, and I'm guessing that you don't like me. Mutual antipathy is a very good reason not to be in this class, and I spent all of last semester stuck with a nutcase who was obsessed with the so-called gods and goddesses."

Janet wasn't stupid enough to call any teacher a nutcase to his face, pseudo-god or not. However, she certainly wasn't above implying it.

"You realise you're hardly the first person who 'doesn't like me on principle'?" Ares grinned and leant back against his desk. "I've developed a really fun coping method."

Janet leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms. "Oh, for crying out loud, avoidance and repression isn't good enough for you?" She'd spent a little too much time around Jack O'Neill. "You realize we're going to make each other's lives miserable this whole semester, right?"

"Well, you're half right."

And cue another eyeroll. "Which half?" she asked dryly.

Ares grinned. "One of us will be miserable."

"We'll just see about that, now, won't we?" asked Janet. Her smile had an edge to it. She glanced down at the syllabus, her eyes widening slightly when she came to week seven, then back up at Ares. "Do you plan on grading fairly for academic work, despite any personal feelings of ~~contempt~~ disbelief a student might have?"

"Of course I do," Ares replied, leaving off the part where gods have different standards of fairness to mortals.

Janet eyed him dubiously. "Right," she said, not sounding convinced. Like she was going to trust an alien impersonating a god? "We'll just see about that."
