Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class One [Period 5, Thursday]

The students were greeted with an empty classroom as they filed in.

Once everyone was seated, Ares appeared in a flash of blue light. "Greetings," he said. "I am Ares, God of War, and before you all start with the questions and flailing and prostrating yourself before me in worship, yes I am the Ares, and I am a real god. I'll be happy to give a demonstration to anyone who doesn't believe me." His tone suggested that while he might be happy to give a demonstrate, the person he gave it to wouldn't be.

"Now, to class. I'm assuming you all signed up because you want to learn more about the gods," Ares said, leaning against his desk. "Believe me you will. Forget the drunken ramblings of half-mad priests and madder politician, from me you'll be hearing firsthand accounts of the gods, in all their glorious and less than glorious moments. As you can see from the syllabus, we will be focusing on the Greek pantheon, otherwise known as the Olympians. Because, hey, you can't escape family."

"Because this is the first class, and I realise you may all be somewhat awed by being taught by me, a real live god, I'm going to go easy on you all, trust me, it won't happen again. Today you're just going to introduce yourself, tell the class which gods and goddesses you worship and why."

He waved a dismissive hand at the class. "Well, what are you waiting for, go on."

Evie gulped, then beamed at him for calling her Evie, then more slowly said, "Professor Covington taught our Myths into History class last term. Mostly about Xena. And in the simulated Final, we had to run through a tomb. One of the last questioners was a man who looked like you, and he wanted to know who started modern medicine in Greece." She blinked at him a moment, then blurted out, "Hippocrates!"

Evie nodded vehemently. "She was heavily featured in the class. Well, really, she was the class-- Dr. Covington was teaching about the Xena Scrolls and what they revealed. I must say I found it difficult to believe she did everything that the professor claimed, but it was absolutely fascinating, even if it wasn't wholly accurate." She looked hopeful. "You know about Xena too?"

"So that was you popping out of a coffin and scaring the life out of me! Well, a holograph modeled on you." Evie looked thrilled. "I got an A on that test!"

"Ummmm, well, she was't mad, precisely...." Evie doesn't remember anything complimentary, and it's not like she completely disagrees about Professor Covington, but she'd never say that out loud. "Oh, this and that. Bits and pieces. She was really a very interesting teacher and of course she had her biases and perhaps it's best not to take this personally given how much time has passed and--" Evie gulped again. "Nothing pertinent. Really." Lots of things that were impertinent, though.

Evie tried to work out if 'don't make him angry' and 'obsessed with Xena' counted as an advantage, then decided to just smile and nod. "Welcome to Fandom?" she tried.
