Walter was too well-trained to guffaw, but it was a near miss. He laughed and waved a hand at her, "No. Tell me. Or I'll find a bootleg of the video."

"I bit the ear off our baby Jesus," Cally said. "And I made out with the wise man on stage. It was bad."

Walter coughed and turned red, trying not to lose it, then bent over his tray laughing at the image of Virgin Cally biting the ear off her baby and making out with the wise man.

"Who played the wise man?" he asked when he could get the question out past the laughs.

"Anders," Cally said. "Cause, well, I was guilting over having to kiss Joseph, who was Bridge."

Walter took a drink of water and caught his breath. "That's something at least. I was wondering if you'd been under some spell that made you kiss the first available person."

"No," Cally said. "But I did start hallucinating after the baby Jesus bit me on the nose."

"The baby Jesus bit you...."

Walter blinked and asked the only logical - for Fandom - follow-up question: "Was the baby Jesus a gremlin?"

"Yep," Cally said. "That, to me, was proof that Principal Bristow was evil."

"I wouldn't know. I came in time for a different sort of evil principal," Walter said. "Although how evil could he have been when he loved pie and golf carts so much?"

"Pie is everything that is wholesome and good," Cally said. "He kinda scared me, though."

"Principal Bristow or Principal Smith?"

Walter might have had a slight warm feeling for Principal Smith, who took his students' shows of affection so well, and who was responsible for his having permission to wear his rings on campus.

Yes, he definitely felt a little warm and fuzzy over the latter. Not that he'd ever tell anyone.

"Both," Cally said. "Definitely both."

"What's that like?" Walter asked. "To be scared? How do you manage?"

Cally blinked.

"You've never been scared?"

"I've been worried for my friends," Walter said, after a moment's thought. "But scared?"

He thought about it some more. "There was the time that I was fighting the werewolf and he had his hands around my throat. I was pretty sure I was going to die, but I'm not sure if I was scared..."

Cally blinked. "I don't think I can really describe being scared. It's like... being scared, that's what it is."

"And it keeps you from doing things, then?" Walter asked. "Why?"

"Cause, well, if you do something, it might be the wrong thing, and it'll probably make things worse, and it'll be your fault," Cally said.

"And if you do nothing, things may be worse and that will be your fault, too," Walter pointed out.

"Yep. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. And bein' scared makes it easier to don't."

Huh.

"Do you always see it that way?" Walter asked, trying to understand something, he wasn't sure what. "What's enough for you to put it aside?"

Thinking about it, his closest friends either didn't do fear much, or if they were like Nadia, usually attacked the source of their fears. He at least understood her approach better.

"Well, it takes, like, thinkin' about badness happening to other people, usually," Cally said. "Like, I was able to fight the zombies cause I wanted to protect Cam, but when the snow monsters came after me all I did was freeze up."

"So, if the trolls had attacked you and you'd thought about how sad Mac would be if you were killed, would that have worked to get you unfrozen?"

Walter was worrying at this concept like a dog with a bone. He knew other people were afraid of things, but he'd never really tried to get at the whole idea of how it worked.

"I think it might, yeah," Cally said. "But, yikes, sometimes you get awfully self centered when you're about to die."

"I guess that depends," Walter said slowly.

Of course, he'd held still to allow Pip to shoot him in the heart to protect his friends from the vampire he'd been. Would be? Might be? That part was still more than a bit confusing.

"I don't think I'm much help for coping ideas. I'm just curious, and you're here and it came up."
