Cally blinked.

"You've never been scared?"

"I've been worried for my friends," Walter said, after a moment's thought. "But scared?"

He thought about it some more. "There was the time that I was fighting the werewolf and he had his hands around my throat. I was pretty sure I was going to die, but I'm not sure if I was scared..."

Cally blinked. "I don't think I can really describe being scared. It's like... being scared, that's what it is."

"And it keeps you from doing things, then?" Walter asked. "Why?"

"Cause, well, if you do something, it might be the wrong thing, and it'll probably make things worse, and it'll be your fault," Cally said.

"And if you do nothing, things may be worse and that will be your fault, too," Walter pointed out.

"Yep. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. And bein' scared makes it easier to don't."

Huh.

"Do you always see it that way?" Walter asked, trying to understand something, he wasn't sure what. "What's enough for you to put it aside?"

Thinking about it, his closest friends either didn't do fear much, or if they were like Nadia, usually attacked the source of their fears. He at least understood her approach better.

"Well, it takes, like, thinkin' about badness happening to other people, usually," Cally said. "Like, I was able to fight the zombies cause I wanted to protect Cam, but when the snow monsters came after me all I did was freeze up."

"So, if the trolls had attacked you and you'd thought about how sad Mac would be if you were killed, would that have worked to get you unfrozen?"

Walter was worrying at this concept like a dog with a bone. He knew other people were afraid of things, but he'd never really tried to get at the whole idea of how it worked.

"I think it might, yeah," Cally said. "But, yikes, sometimes you get awfully self centered when you're about to die."

"I guess that depends," Walter said slowly.

Of course, he'd held still to allow Pip to shoot him in the heart to protect his friends from the vampire he'd been. Would be? Might be? That part was still more than a bit confusing.

"I don't think I'm much help for coping ideas. I'm just curious, and you're here and it came up."

"Hey, as far as I stand, I try to avoid bein' scared as best I can," Cally said. "Hence the not going after trolls thing."

Somehow Walter found it amusingly ironic that Cally had pursued Nadia so ardently, and he didn't think Nadia was a girlfriend for the faint of heart.

"I'm not sure this island is the best of places not to be scared. But on to other topics - I haven't met Mac more than in passing. What is she like?"

Cally's head spun a little at the sudden jump in subject.

"Well, I mean, you're bound to get a biased account here. I think she's beautiful, funny, smart, knows more about computers than anyone else I know, she's really helpful, and she's a Vegan. And she's totally the best kisser ever."

Walter doubted that Mac was the best kisser ever. In fact, his ego muttered something about Cally having kissed both him and Nadia, so she must be quite infatuated with Mac.

Another, even baser part of his back brain muttered that she'd also never kissed someone with more than five hundred years of experience.

He kept both mutterings to himself.

"What's a Vegan? Is that her home planet?"

Cally giggled. "No, she's from California," she said. "It means she doesn't eat animal products. Like, any of them."

Walter blinked at the idea. "That's unnatural. It's bad enough those people who won't eat meat, but no animal products at all?"

"Nope, none," Cally said. "I haven't asked her why, yet. I figured it just made sense, so, no need to worry about. It's kinda cute, you know? It's all protect-y of the animals."

"But most animals you can't talk to are good to eat," Walter protested.

And so were some of the ones he could talk to. Lobster. Yum.

"I'm sure people taste good too, doesn't mean we should eat them," Cally said.

"So you're going to stop eating meat, then?" Walter asked, jabbing a meatball with his fork and waving it at her. "Doesn't that seem unnatural when we have teeth and stomachs made for eating it?"

Cally went in attempts to snag the meatball with her teeth. "Nope. I'm still a heartless animal killer."

"There's hope for you yet," Walter said and made sure his fork was in a meatball snaggable spot that didn't involve jabbing her mouth with the tines.

"One carnivore at a time."

Cally was carefuly not to try and talk with Walter's meat in her mouth, so she waited until she'd finished and swallowed before continuing the conversation.

"It's the whole 'have to be careful what cookies you can eat' thing that really bites," she said.
