Lunch - Monday

Cally giggled. "No, she's from California," she said. "It means she doesn't eat animal products. Like, any of them."

Walter blinked at the idea. "That's unnatural. It's bad enough those people who won't eat meat, but no animal products at all?"

"Nope, none," Cally said. "I haven't asked her why, yet. I figured it just made sense, so, no need to worry about. It's kinda cute, you know? It's all protect-y of the animals."

"But most animals you can't talk to are good to eat," Walter protested.

And so were some of the ones he could talk to. Lobster. Yum.

"I'm sure people taste good too, doesn't mean we should eat them," Cally said.

"So you're going to stop eating meat, then?" Walter asked, jabbing a meatball with his fork and waving it at her. "Doesn't that seem unnatural when we have teeth and stomachs made for eating it?"

Cally went in attempts to snag the meatball with her teeth. "Nope. I'm still a heartless animal killer."

"There's hope for you yet," Walter said and made sure his fork was in a meatball snaggable spot that didn't involve jabbing her mouth with the tines.

"One carnivore at a time."

Cally was carefuly not to try and talk with Walter's meat in her mouth, so she waited until she'd finished and swallowed before continuing the conversation.

"It's the whole 'have to be careful what cookies you can eat' thing that really bites," she said.

"Why is that?" Oh wait. "You mean all animal products like eggs and butter, too? That's..." loony.

"Yep, none," Cally said, shaking her head. "I'm amazed she's as happy as she is."

"I'm amazed she isn't transparent."

"Apparently there's plenty of vegan stuffs in the world," Cally said. "She eats healthier than I do, I'm pretty sure."

Given Walter's idea of eating healthy came from 1940s England, he found that impossible to believe. What was a diet without some animal fat in it? Preferably a lot of animal fat in it.

"And she does it voluntarily? Not because of religion or health?"

"Totally voluntarily," Cally said. "I think. I'll have to ask. I never really thought to ask about it, I just sorta accepted it."

Huh. Walter somehow found that harder to comprehend than fighting a troll invasion.

"I suppose we all accept quirks about our boyfriends and girlfriends." Certainly his had all had quirks galore.

"Yep, cause they accept ours," Cally said. "Until they don't, and that's usually when they stop being your girlfriend or boyfriend."

"Here's to hoping all our quirks remain acceptable," Walter said, holding up his water glass in a toast.

"Have you given any thought to Christmas? Oh, and is your moonshine non-poisonous yet?"

"What about thinking about Christmas? And yes."

Walter shrugged. "I'm just trying to get ideas for things to get Nadia, and a girl seems like a good person to ask. I promised her something sparkly and something dangerous."

"Get her a grenade covered in glitter?" Cally said.

"I need to get down to Sparky and see about commissioning a new multi-tool for her, since she left hers in Argentina," Walter said.

"Then I'm not sure. I gave her a necklace a while ago. Rings are rather... you know. I don't know much about bracelets and even less about earrings. I suppose I could give her a watch...?"

"Cause, you know, you don't know anyone who's good with tools and built a outboard motor from scratch," Cally said.

"Do you remember the multi-tool she had?" Walter asked. "Could you make something like that again?"

Cally thought for a minute, and she sketched out mental plans on the lunchroom table for another minute, her tongue stuck out a little past her teeth in concentration.

A minute later, she had and answer.

"Not unless you want one too big to fit in her pocket," she announced.
