Criminal Justice [first period, Tuesday 11/14]

Students had been ~~handwave~~ alerted to the fact that the class would be held in the Danger Shop today, and so V was waiting for them when they all filed in.

"Good morning," V said as the simulation immediately placed them in the spacious, white lobby of a building. "Today, we'll be doing a tactical simulation. You and the partner you chose last week have a mission: to find the control room at the top of the tower. In it, there is a ticking device, which will have quite an impact on the entire city if you don't stop it. And no, the lifts aren't working. Your mission, young ones, is to make your way to the control room while dodging guards and personnel, and disengage the device using only your available resources, and to do so by the end of the period."

He tilted his head. "And for now, that means wits and no weapons, though you all do get maps of the building. Oh, and a final thing. The building is not empty. This is a business. The civilians haven't any idea what's going on, though, and you mustn't panic them. You may, however, ask them for assistance in such a way as to not alert them to the situation."

V clapped his hands once, and then retreated to fully start the simulation. He didn't want to be in it, if old friends showed up.

Jack leaned casually against a wall, smiling at the occasional passerby, while he waited for John.

[ooc: but I'm going to be AFK until about 2pm EST.]

John ~~finally woke up~~ walked over to Jack. "Hey, man."

"Hey, John." Jack pushed off the wall and grinned. "Ready to storm the tower?"

"Think so," John answered. "I woke up on the storming the tower side of the bed this morning."

"That's an extremely handy coincidence," Jack replied, trying not to chuckle. "So, no elevators, and I don't see a plane, so that's out. I'm thinking we need stairs and a reason to be there."

"Hmm." John thought for a minute. "Say one of us lost a contact up there? We're taking a smoke break?"

Looking thoughtful, he said, "Lot of stairs to climb to have a smoke, when we could just go outside. We could play the here-for-a-meeting game," he looked own at his jeans and t-shirt, "but I'm not really dressed for it. Unless, computer consultants, maybe?"

"Tech guys," John agreed and nodded. "Having to go floor to floor to check computer's for a potentially devastating virus? Give us an excuse to keep going up the stairs."

"Perfect. Also explains why no tools. Don't need anything but our hands and our brains." Jack flipped open the map and held it flat. "So, if we go down there," he pointed down the corridor, "and turn left, there's a door into the stairs." He looked at John. "Sound good?"

"Sounds good," John nodded. "Let's go."

John started off down the corridor.

A tall man hurried past, and paused. "Are you boys visitors to the building?" he asked kindly.

"Sort of," John responded. "We're computer guys. Uh, IT techs."

Gordon smiled, and leaned in confidentially with a wink. "It's all right, I won't tell on you. We get a lot of kids sneaking in to try to meet the stars."

"We're on the level," John says. "There's a potentially virulent virus on one of the PC's here. We're here to eradicate it and stop its spread before it affects the network."

"We have an in-house IT department," Gordon replied. "Now, would you like an autograph?"

"Private consultants," John answered. "And no, we're just here to do a job."

"You're a bit young," Gordon said, folding his hands behind his back. He eyed them critically, then dropped his voice. "Fingermen? Oh, I do apologize if that's the case. Just having a spot of fun."

"Young and nerdy," John said, trying for humor. "It was fixing computers or hacking them."

"Hacking?" Gordon looked impressed, and glanced around nervously. "What sort of hacking?"

John smiled. "I don't think this is the best place to discuss that. We're just here to do a job."

"Of course, of course," Gordon said, looking a bit paranoid. "Best of luck, then."

"Thanks," John said and nodded politely.

At the risk of telling two different stories, Jack had kept his mouth shut. "You're good at this," he told John, voice low, as the man walked away. "Not sure how I feel about being described as young and nerdy, though."

John laughed and said, "We both know the truth. That dude will just live with the memory of two young and nerdy guys."

"True. With a bit of luck, he won't remember us at all. Now," glancing casually down the hall, he held open the door to the stairs. "After you, oh young and nerdy one."
