fandomhigh | Criminal Justice [first period, Tuesday 11/14]

Students had been ~~handwave~~ alerted to the fact that the class would be held in the Danger Shop today, and so V was waiting for them when they all filed in.

"Good morning," V said as the simulation immediately placed them in the spacious, white lobby of a building. "Today, we'll be doing a tactical simulation. You and the partner you chose last week have a mission: to find the control room at the top of the tower. In it, there is a ticking device, which will have quite an impact on the entire city if you don't stop it. And no, the lifts aren't working. Your mission, young ones, is to make your way to the control room while dodging guards and personnel, and disengage the device using only your available resources, and to do so by the end of the period."

He tilted his head. "And for now, that means wits and no weapons, though you all do get maps of the building. Oh, and a final thing. The building is not empty. This is a business. The civilians haven't any idea what's going on, though, and you mustn't panic them. You may, however, ask them for assistance in such a way as to not alert them to the situation."

V clapped his hands once, and then retreated to fully start the simulation. He didn't want to be in it, if old friends showed up.

"We have an in-house IT department," Gordon replied. "Now, would you like an autograph?"

"Private consultants," John answered. "And no, we're just here to do a job."

"You're a bit young," Gordon said, folding his hands behind his back. He eyed them critically, then dropped his voice. "Fingermen? Oh, I do apologize if that's the case. Just having a spot of fun."

"Young and nerdy," John said, trying for humor. "It was fixing computers or hacking them."

"Hacking?" Gordon looked impressed, and glanced around nervously. "What sort of hacking?"

John smiled. "I don't think this is the best place to discuss that. We're just here to do a job."

"Of course, of course," Gordon said, looking a bit paranoid. "Best of luck, then."

"Thanks," John said and nodded politely.

At the risk of telling two different stories, Jack had kept his mouth shut. "You're good at this," he told John, voice low, as the man walked away. "Not sure how I feel about being described as young and nerdy, though."

John laughed and said, "We both know the truth. That dude will just live with the memory of two young and nerdy guys."

"True. With a bit of luck, he won't remember us at all. Now," glancing casually down the hall, he held open the door to the stairs. "After you, oh young and nerdy one."

A tall woman emerged from the stairwell, and eyed Jack and John critically. "Do you work for me?"

Jack smiled warmly at her. "That depends. Who are you?"

She raised a brow. "Then you don't. Are you actors? The studio's that way."

Jack grinned and shook his head. "I wish we were actors. Or lucky enough to work for you. But we're just lowly consultants. Your IT department called us in. We've got a bit of experience tracking the virus that's about to wreak havoc on your entire system."

"We have an in-house IT department," she said. "ID, please?"

Sighing heavily, Jack shook his head and shot a glare at John. "I

told

you it wasn't going to work. We should have just gone down there with the rest of them." Shoulders slumped, he smiled apologetically at the woman. "You caught us. We are actors. He," and he glared at John again, "thought it would be a good idea to try and find someone higher up to impress, sort of skip the whole audition process." Eyes wide, he looked hopefully at her. "I guess that's out of the question now?"

Patricia stared at him. "Just a bit," she said icily. "Off the premises. Now."

"Can we just go to your roof really quick and take a picture? I collect...rooftop pictures."

Patricia just stared at him. "Are you deranged?"

"It's a hobby," John said and made his lower lip wibble.

She rolled her eyes. "I don't have time for this," she said, pushing past. "Off the premises. I'm calling security." She turned to walk away, pulling out her cell phone as she went.

"Jack!" John flailed. "Now what?"

"Wait," Jack called out. "Please. Look, I'm sorry. I really am. This was a stupid idea, and it's as much my fault as his, but he's my cousin," he hurried to stand by her side, dropping his voice, "and he's a bit odd sometimes, but he's a good actor - I couldn't say no. Don't kick us out? Please? We really need the work."

Patricia paused and put her phone away. "Report to the studio. You're no longer my responsibility," she sighed. "And I suggest you take your careers more seriously."
