Library [09/20]

Bridge arrives bright and early for his first time opening the library, and and settles in behind the desk with a notebook and schematics for the projects he's currently working on.

"I have several," Bridge says, looking up and giving Door a grin. "In a row, even. What's up?"

She waves the abridged Princess Bride. "The card catalog says that the sequel to this is here, but I can't find it on the shelf." Door makes a ~~pteranadon~~ grimacey face. "Also I'm not sure if it's an abridged version or not. I'd like to read the story, but not fifty-seven pages on the monetary exchange rates between Guilder and Florin."

"I can look it up on the computer!" Bridge offers. "There's a catalogue on there too, and it'll also say whether the book is checked out or something."

"Oh, I didn't know there was one there as well." Door peers at the monitor, or, really, the back of the monitor in this case, which probably isn't going to do her much good. "Would you please? I'm not sure I'd know what I was doing, yet. They're rather a new thing for me."

"Sure," Bridge says, turning the monitor so that she can see the screen too. He taps a few keys until the information he wants comes up on the screen. "Uh, the abridged version is checked out, see? But the unabridged one should be out on the shelves."

Door frowns. "I didn't see it in the fiction section. Where else might it be?"

"Maybe someone put it back in the wrong place," Bridge says, frowning thoughtfully. "We could go look for it, or something?"

Door turns her head to glance at the shelves. "That's a lot of books to look through."

"Hmm," Bridge says. "I don't *think* I could track it. Not the right kind of energy."

"Track it?" Door asks, a thought that might not be unsimilar beginning to form in her own mind.

"Uh, remember when I said that seeing things is what I do?" Bridge says. "It's actually... I sense energy. Well, the psychic and electric kinds, anyway. As far as I can tell."

Door nods. "I reckoned you meant you had some sort of Sight. I don't really, not that way, but..." She puts her fingers to her forehead, trying to concentrate. "I'm good with locks and doors. Sometimes I can find things by looking for a lock that's got something to hide."

"It could be worth a try," Bridge says, glancing around the library. "If the book is hiding somewhere, or something."

Door moves towards the shelves, then stops and casts a dry look towards Special Collections. "Of course that's a little distracting. A bit like standing next to the ocean and trying to dowse for a tidepool."

Bridge follows her gaze. "Yeah, know what you mean, there." He says. "It's not exactly... self-aware? But it's definitely- there's *some* degree of sentience."

Door nods. "It's also just big. And designed to keep things in and most people out. So it's quite like one giant lock, in a way."

"I haven't been in there," Bridge says. "Yet. I bet there'd be all sorts of interesting stuff to explore, though."

Door, who's read the library rules backwards and forwards by now, as it's the last place she ever wants to get herself barred from, says, "You have to have a pass from a teacher to go in, I gather, though perhaps that doesn't apply to the library aides?" She eyes the shelves thoughtfully, before turning to the public ones and running her fingers along the nearest, searching with her mind for a door or lock that the book she wants might be hidden behind.

"Yeah, library aides are supposed to go with someone when they go in to SC, so it'd be awkward if we had to get a pass every time too."

"You have a point." There is...something, though it's not on a shelf. Door follows the feeling down one of the aisles, towards a small study area.

"You pick up on something?" Bridge asks, bouncing a little as he follows her.

"Maybe. There's something in--" Ah - there's a desk, with two drawers built into one side. "--there. The bottom one." Which unlike the smaller top drawer, filled with pencils and notepads, has a lock on it.

"Can you open it?" Bridge asks.

Door nods. She kneels down next to the drawer. "Though perhaps it's locked for a reason? If I'm not meant to be messing about with it..." She trails off.

"If it were *really* dangerous, it'd be in Special Collections," Bridge points out. "And someone probably would've told me about it, if it was important."
